U.S. Intercepts More Houthi Drones, Strikes Yemen

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on March 28 that its forces intercepted four long-range suicide drones which were launched by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) from Yemen a day earlier.

The drones were aimed at a U.S. warship and were engaged in “self-defense” over the Red Sea, the command said in a statement, adding that there were no injuries or damage reported to U.S. or coalition ships.

“It was determined these weapons presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and U.S. Navy ships in the region. These actions are taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S. Navy and merchant vessels,” CENTCOM concluded.

CENTCOM didn’t annonce launching any strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen on March 27. However, Al-Masirah TV, which is run by the Houthis, reported “American-British” strikes on the northern province of Saada, the heartland of the group.

The strike hit the area of al-Kutaynat in the district of Baqim, the news channel said without providing further information.

The Houthis have attacked more than 60 vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since last November in response to the Israeli war and siege on Gaza.

The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January in an attempt to deter the group. At least 34 people were killed in the strikes. However, the Houthis are now developing their offensive capabilities and planning to expand their operations to cover vessels in the Indian Ocean, as they travel toward the Cape of Good Hope.

the reality is that the houthis have achieved their goal. they have effectively stopped the bulk of merchant shipping transiting the red sea. american-british strikes on houthi positions have worsened the situation by creating a ‘war zone’. the us/uk need to wake up to the fact that the houthis hold the ace card.
