The US is flying drones over the Gaza Strip to help gather intelligence on the locations of hostages taken by the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions during the October 7 surprise attack, Reuters reported on November 3, citing a pair of United States officials.
One of the officials told the news agency that the drone flights began over a week ago. A number of U.S. citizens are among those being held in Gaza.
Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said on November 3 that the number of hostages believed to be held in the Strip was 241. He noted that the number is not final as the military investigates new information on those missing since the Hamas-led attack.
Reuters’ report confirmed an investigation by The New York Times that was published a day earlier. The newspaper said that the drones flying over Gaza are MQ-9 Reapers operated by the U.S. Special Operations forces. The drones were first spotted on October 28 on Flightradar24, a publicly accessible flight-tracking website, though Pentagon officials said that the aircraft have been active in the area since the days after the attack.
Pentagon officials told the newspaper that the drones are not supporting Israeli military operations on the ground in Gaza. A claim that will be hard to verify considering that the MQ-9s are combat capable drones, which are armed and can be also used to direct strikes.
The New York Times said that at least six MQ-9s are involved in the operation and a graphic shared by the newspaper shows that the drones are flying around 24 kilometers away from northern Gaza, where Israeli troops are currently advancing.
The U.S. military has been providing military aid, including bombs and artillery rounds, to Israel, and has deployed two carrier strike groups, a Marines expeditionary unit, a dozen air defense systems and hundreds of troops to the Middle East since the outbreak of the war in Gaza.
In addition, several dozen American commandos have been dispatched to Israel, allegedly to help advise on hostage recovery efforts.
The U.S. unconditional support for Israel caused a backlash in the Arab and Islamic world. More than two dozen rocket and drone attacks also targeted bases hosting American troops in Iraq and Syria in recent weeks, causing casualties and material losses.
It’s worth noting that the U.S. The Secretary of State arrived in Israel on November 3 to discuss issues related to the war in Gaza, including a possible deal to free the hostages and temporary ceasefire and the delivery of humanitarian aid. He will reportedly meet with Arab foreign ministers in Jordan later. These diplomatic advances are likely meant to cover up U.S. growing involvement in the Israeli war.
