The U.S.-led coalition announced on May 22 that it had eliminated two senior commanders of ISIS in the eastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor.

The commanders, identified as Ahmad ‘Isa Ismail al-Zawi and Ahmad ‘Abd Muhammad Hasan al-Jughayfi, were killed in a joint operation, which was carried out by coalition forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on May 17.

“Ahmad ‘Isa Ismail lbarhirn al-Zawi, also known as Abu All al-Baghdadi, was the ISIS Wali of North Baghdad. As a regional leader, al-Zawi was responsible for disseminating terrorist guidance from senior ISIS leadership to operatives in North Baghdad.

Ahmad ‘Abd Muhammad Hasan al-Jughayfi, also known as Abu Ammar, was a senior ISIS logistics and supplies official responsible for directing the acquisition and transport of weapons, IED materials, and personnel across Iraq and Syria,” the coalition said in a statement.

According to local sources, al-Zawi and al-Jughayfi were killed in the town of al-Busayra in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside. The two commanders were taking shelter in houses of locals that currently live abroad the country.

The coalition claimed that the elimination of the commanders will disrupt future attacks against innocent civilians and U.S. allies in the region.

In the last few weeks, the U.S. intensified its operations against ISIS cells in Syria. A former director in the group’s Real Estate Directorate known as Mohamad Khalid al-Adad was killed in a recent raid in southeast Deir Ezzor.

Meanwhile in Turkish-occupied Afrin in northern Syria, an airstrike, allegedly carried out by a U.S. drone, killed Abu Zaki al-Taibani, the military commander of ISIS’ Hama Wilayat.

The recent operations revealed that ISIS commanders in Syria are taking shelters in areas controlled by the U.S. allies, Turkey and the SDF.
