The Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria has reported more violations by the United States-led coalition of the country’s airspace.
During a briefing on September 14, Rear Admiral Vadim Kulit, deputy chief of the reconciliation center, revealed that coalition fighter jets and drones violated Syria’s airspace 15 times over the past day.
“Aircraft of the US-led so-called international anti-terrorist coalition continues to create dangerous situations in the sky over Syria, performing flights in violation of the deconfliction protocols and violating Syria’s airspace. Fifteen violations of the protocols were detected over the past day,” the commander said.
According to Kulit, a pair of F-35 and a pair of F-16 fighter jets, as well as an MQ-1C combat drone of the coalition violated the airspace over the southeastern area of al-Tanf five times during the same period.
The U.S.-led coalition maintains a garrison in al-Tanf with a 55-kilometer no-fly zone. In addition, it keeps a network of bases at key oil and gas fields in the northeastern governorates of Deir Ezzor and al-Hasakah. This presence is allegedly meant to counter ISIS.
“These actions by the coalition continue to create dangerous conditions that may cause air accidents or emergencies and escalate the situation in Syria’s airspace,” Kurlit said.
The Syrian government does not approve of the coalition presence and considers it to be an occupation. On the other hand, the Russian military is present in the country to counter ISIS and other terrorist groups under an invitation from the government.
The U.S.-led coalition attempts to expand its operations over Syria without the approval of the government or any coordination with the Russian military group there could eventually lead to dangerous incidents.
