The United States has resumed operations in Niger, flying drones and manned aircraft out of air bases there more than a month after the country’s president Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown by the military, the head of Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa announced on September 13.
General James Hecker said that negotiations with the military rulers of Niger resulted in some intelligence and surveillance missions resuming.
“For a while, we weren’t doing any missions on the bases, they pretty much closed down the airfields,” Hecker told reporters at the annual Air and Space Forces Association convention. “Through the diplomatic process, we are now doing, I wouldn’t say 100 percent of the missions that we were doing before, but we’re doing a large amount of missions that we’re doing before.”
The commander added that the U.S. is flying both drone and manned missions and that those flights resumed “within the last couple of weeks”.
Last week, the Pentagon announced it had withdrawn some of its 1,1000 troops from Niger and repositioned others within the country.
The move came after the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service revealed that Washington was considering the possibility of physically eliminating the leaders of Niger’s National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, who led the military takeover.
The U.S. has been vocal about its support for a military intervention by the Economic Community of West African Countries against Niger’s new military rulers.
It’s worth noting that Niger also hosts some 1,500 troops from France, who continue to support Bazoum. Niger’s military rulers have called for the French military to leave the country and even accused Paris of amassing forces in neighboring states for an invasion.
