US special forces with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in northern Syria, May 26
A newly-deployed unit of U.S. special forces is searching for wanted ISIS members in the middle Euphrates River Valley, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) revealed on February 1.
“Around 700 personnel of U.S. special forces are looking for wanted terrorists who fled the Islamic State pocket on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River … These forces have photos of the wanted terrorists, they are asking about them,” the monitoring group said in its report.
Beside looking for these wanted terrorists among the displaced civilians, U.S. special forces are also seeking information about ISIS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, according to the SOHR.
The monitoring group’s claims come in line with a recent report of the al-Araby al-Jadeed outlet, which revealed that a unit of U.S. special forces has entered Syria from Iraq in order to hunt down Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
The remaining ISIS fighters and commanders are currently trapped in a 4km2 pocket in the Euphrates Valley. A spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the group leading the ground attack, said that the pocket will be liberated within a few days.
