The Pentagon announced on September 26 that the U.S. military will deploy air-defense systems and additional troops in Saudi Arabia.
In an official statement, Chief Pentagon Spokesperson Jonathan Hoffman said that U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper has decided to deploy the following equipment to the kingdom:
- One Patriot Battery
- Four Sentinel RADARs
- Approximately 200 support personnel
In addition, the U.S. Millitary putting two Patriot Batteries and a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system (THAAD) on Prepare To Deploy Orders (PTDO). According to Hoffman, these equipment will maintain a state of readiness.
“It is important to note these steps are a demonstration of our commitment to regional partners, and the security and stability in the Middle East. This follows the Secretary and Chairman’s extensive outreach to partners in the region, and around the globe,” Hoffman said in the statement.
The deployment of these forces are a direct response to the September 14 Abqaiq–Khurais attack, which disrupted Saudi Arabia’s oil export. The U.S. blamed Iran for the attack without providing a sufficient evidence.
