United States officials are considering ending support for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Israel Hayom reported on June 8.
The news outlet said that Israel will back the decision if the administration of President Donald Trump decides to go on with it.
The presence of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in southern Lebanon has proven relatively effective in pushing back Hezbollah and keeping the group from rearming itself, making the presence of the UNIFIL not all that necessary, according to the outlets.
Sources familiar with the matter told The Times of Israel that the U.S. has not yet made up its mind regarding its future support for UNIFIL, but that it wants to see major reforms, which could mean pulling support.
The UNIFIL has been operating in southern Lebanon since 1978, when it was created to oversee the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the region. The UN peacekeeping force expanded its mission following the war of 2006 under UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
After a U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon put an end to more than a year of clashes between Israel and Hezbollah last November, the UNIFIL began to play a secondary role of the LAF, which led the implementation of the agreement based on Resolution 1701.
As the peacekeeping forces mandate is granted through a UN Security Council resolution each year, the U.S. could simply veto the next resolution in August.
These reports came as Israel continues to launch strikes against Hezbollah across Lebanon, in defiance of the ceasefire agreement.
In addition, Israel has refused to completely withdraw from southern Lebanon in line with the agreement, keeping troops at five strategic posts in the region.
Dissolving the UNIFIL would allow Israel to operate in Lebanon with even more freedom. It would also force the LAF to cooperate more directly with Israel. In general, the U.S. decision, which could reignite the war in Lebanon, is meant to further pressure Hezbollah.
