The United Kingdom and France are actively working to provide Kiev with a nuclear bomb, the press bureau of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) reported on February 24.
In a statement, the intelligence service said that the elites in British and French are unwilling to accept the defeat in Ukraine.
“It is believed that Ukraine should be supplied with a ‘Wunderwaffe’ [German for ‘miracle weapon’ – TASS]. Kiev would be able to aspire to more advantageous terms of ceasing the hostilities if it possesses a nuclear or at least a so-called ‘dirty’ bomb,” the statement said.
“At present, according to the information available to the Russian SVR, London and Paris are actively working over the issue of providing Kiev with a weapon of this kind, as well as with means of its delivery. This involves a covert transfer of relevant European-made components, equipment and technologies to Ukraine. As an option, the French small-size TN-75 warhead from the M51.1 submarine-launched ballistic missile is being considered,” the press bureau pointed out. At the same time, “Berlin has prudently refused to take part in this dangerous venture.”
The TN-75 is a 150kt thermonuclear warhead. It is small in size, hardened, and stealthy. At least 290 warheads of this type were built for the French Navy.
The SVR stressed in the statement that London and Paris’ “extremely dangerous plans prove that they have lost touch with reality.”
“Their hopes to escape from responsibility are baseless, especially bearing in mind that there is nothing hidden that will not eventually be disclosed. In the military, political and diplomatic circles there are plenty of sober-minded people understanding that reckless actions of their leaders pose a threat to the whole world,” the intelligence service concluded.
Commenting on the SVR’s report, Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Security Council of Russia, warned that any such move could trigger a sever Russian response.
“Information from the SVR about France and Britain’s intention to transfer nuclear technologies to the Kiev Nazi regime radically changes the situation. And it’s not about the destruction of the NPT (Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons) and other things in international law. This is a direct transfer of nuclear weapons to a warring country,” Medvedev told RT.
“There can’t be the slightest doubt that under such circumstances, Russia will have to use any, including non-strategic nuclear weapons, against targets in Ukraine that pose a threat to our country. And if necessary, against the supplier countries that become accomplices in a nuclear conflict with Russia,” he added.
Since the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine four years ago, Kiev has been very public about its desire to acquire nuclear weapons.
While attending the European Council summit in Brussels in October of 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine’s survival can only be ensured by joining NATO or giving Kyiv nuclear weapons. Later in February of 2025, Zelenskyy said during an interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored that Ukraine should be given nuclear weapons once the hot phase of the conflict with Russia is over.
If Ukraine actually receives TN-75 nuclear warheads from the UK and France, it will likely use them to arm the ballistic missiles it is currently attempting to develop.
One of the options would be Sapsan, also known as Hirm and Grom, which is believed to have a maximum range of 700 kilometers. This is one of Ukraine’s longest running missile programs. While it has reached the production phase, a Russian attack last year is believed to have set it back way behind.
Two other options are the FP-7 and FP-9 currently being developed by Ukraine’s Fire Point, which will reportedly have a range of 200 kilometers and 855 kilometers respectively.
The more likely option will likely be, however, Project Nightfall, which the UK announced last January. The missile will have a range of 500 kilometers.
While the SVR didn’t provide much technical details, it is very likely that France will be providing the TN-75 nuclear warheads, while the UK would provide the Nightfall missiles as delivery vehicles.
Such a move by London and Paris would cause unprecedented escalation, especially that Ukraine could use any nuclear weapons to threaten Moscow. It is unlikely that the United States would approve of such a move. Russia, from its side, could act pre-emitively against all parties involved.
