The United Kingdom military has flown 50 surveillance missions over the Palestinian Gaza Strip in support of Israel since December, Declassified UK revealed on January 18.
The flights have taken off from the UK’s controversial air base on Cyprus, Royal Air Force (RAF) Akrotiri, The British plane used in the missions is the Shadow R1, a modified Beechcraft aircraft that the RAF uses for intelligence gathering.
The British flights began on December 3 when two R1s flew over Gaza. The flights have continued nearly daily up, with around half the days featuring two flights. On 3 January, there were three R1 flights over the Strip. On average, each flight lasted around six hours, according to Declassified UK.
The UK Ministry of Defence announced on December 2 that it would begin surveillance flights over Gaza “in support of the ongoing hostage rescue activity”.
“The safety of British nationals is our utmost priority,” the UK Ministry of Defence said in a statement at the time. “In support of the ongoing hostage rescue activity, the Ministry of Defence will conduct surveillance flights over the eastern Mediterranean, including operating in air space over Israel and Gaza.”
The ministry added that the surveillance aircraft will be unarmed and will be tasked solely to locate hostages held by the Hamas Movement in Gaza.
“Only information relating to hostage rescue will be passed to the relevant authorities responsible for hostage rescue,” the ministry said.
Five British nationals went missing after the October 7 surprise attack on Israel. Last week, the UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron confirmed that Hamas holds just two British hostages.
The fact that no attempt to rescue any British hostage has been made since the start of the RAF surveillance flights over Gaza, raises suspicions that the UK is not just looking for its hostages, but collecting all sorts of intelligence to support the Israeli war effort.
It’s worth noting that the United States has been also flying MQ-9 combat drones over Gaza in “support of hostage recovery efforts” since last November.
