On March 25th, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed into effect the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine “On the Military Security Strategy of Ukraine,” his press service reported.
The document provides for the introduction of a comprehensive approach to the defense of Ukraine in the face of a military threat to national security associated with the use of hybrid methods.
“Ukraine’s comprehensive defense corresponds to the sovereign inalienable right of every state to self-defense against aggression enshrined in the UN Charter and is not aimed at achieving military parity with the Russian Federation, which would lead to excessive militarization of the state. It provides for maintaining the balance and combination of military and non-military means to ensure the military security of Ukraine,” reads the document.
The strategy defines the goals, priorities and objectives of state policy in the military, defense and military construction.
“The document is aimed at protecting national interests from military threats, repelling and deterring armed aggression against Ukraine, preventing or restraining the enemy from full-scale use of military force against Ukraine, termination of the temporary occupation by the Russian Federation of part of the territory of Ukraine, protection of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine primarily through the implementation of international legal, political and diplomatic, security, humanitarian and economic measures.”
Notably, Crimea being part of Russia, following a referendum is referred to as a “temporary occupation by the Russian Federation of the territory of Ukraine.”
The same goes for the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.
Those expecting peace in Eastern Ukraine are heading quickly towards disappointment.
To help in the defense against “the Great Aggressor”, the US continues its support of Ukraine.
On March 25th, a consignment with a total weight of 350 tons arrived in port of Odessa, Ukraine. The primary delivery included 35 Humvees, but also other equipment.

The government of Volodymyr Zelensky has launched the competition for one of the most strategic European defense contracts for the coming years: the renewal of its fleet of fighter jets.
Volodymyr Zelensky’s emissaries recently informed Western capitals that the head of state is preparing to store his country’s entire fleet of fighter jets, dating from the Soviet era, in the hangars. The Kiev government wants to equip itself in the west, either with light planes, in which case the F-16 is ideal, or with heavier multirole planes, which would open up competition to the Dassault Rafale and the FA- 18 from Boeing.
Reportedly, the issue is at the top of the agenda for Emmanuel Macron’s next visit to Ukraine, originally scheduled for the end of March, but which has been postponed. The French president believes in the Rafale’s chances of winning in this former bastion of Russian industry.
Paris has one advantage: its commercial system capable of supporting such a contract is already in place.
Washington, for its part, is not going to stand idly by for such a strategic contract, which would install an American hunt at the gates of Russia – a major snub for Moscow. It is the FA-18 which should be presented soon.

Hype in Europe is due to the recent claims at a meeting of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence on March 11th, when the Commander of the Air Forces of Ukraine presented a preliminary long-term development plan “Vision of the Air Forces 2035”, which was approved on May 15, 2020.
The plan considers replacing of the MiG-29, Su-27, Su-24M, Su-25, Su-24MR aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force with a single multi-purpose fighter.
According to the plan, at first, Kiev intended to buy American F-15 (specified-F-15EX) and Swedish Saab Gripen jets, and then, to receive fifth-generation Lockheed Martin F-35 fighters.
In the current situation, it is extremely difficult for the Ukrainian leadership to find the funds necessary to implement its plans. Apparently, this is the reason for the information that the Ukrainian side has started contacts with France on the possible purchase of the Dassault Rafale. Rafale is a rival for McDonnell Douglas F-15EX Eagle, which was planned for purchase first. Due to the current economic situation in France, pandemic crisis and death of one of its directors, Dassault experiences significant difficulties and may become a beneficial partner for Kiev.
The new Biden administration is inclined to drastically revamp its support for Kiev – even though the president and his son’s ties to Ukraine have become a matter of US domestic policy.
The Congress is already providing substantial aid of several hundred million dollars divided into several defense and security consignment to Ukraine. In addition, Washington is assisting the Ukrainian defense complex as closely as possible: many American officials are thus stationed within the entities of the ministry, such as the defense conglomerate Ukroboronprom.

Obviously not “inalienable” and not “enshrined ( in the UN Charter) ” enough. Since that “right” was not valid for Yugoslavia and Kosovo, so there is no reason to be valid now. Precedent of right on “self determination” over the sovereignty of any country was single handedly imposed by US (Super Power at the time) to the present day.

Flop-35 is not “multi role” jet at all (like F-16 it was suppose to replace)! …. actually it is the only existing jet that has NO precise role. Since it is not capable to do any role successfully enough (not even as strike aircraft).

When it comes to Ukrainian investments in new equipment it all comes down to financing. Ukraine economy is so bad that they can’t afford to buy the needed equipment. Who will more or less give Ukraine their equipment at a very low cost or loans which probably leads to equipment that very close to end of life. Maybe they should lease JAS-39 Gripen.

In US, the USAF recently, and quietly, stated the F-35 is a failure and they need to commission a new low-cost fighter to replace the aging F-16, as F-35 cannot achieve this task, as was originally envisaged, due to excessive flight-time and maintenance costs, combined with unacceptable, overall, fleet percentage unreliability. If a new US F-16 replacement program did come to fruition, they would have a whole load of used, and tired, F-16’s to sell. And what better sucker than the current corruption addled Ukrainian vassal state, a secondary market deal for worn out US air-frames, with everyone involved taking a cut all the way down the line.
