The Russian military is using reconnaissance drones shaped like birds to spy on Ukraine, the country’s media reported on July 9.
One such biomorphic drone crashed recently in territory controlled by Kiev forces, according to the reports. The drone is shaped very much like a bird with two electric motors, a beak instead of a nose cones, wings and a tail that features imitate feathers.
Ukrainian media also reported that the Russian biomorphic drone is almost inaudible, especially at dusk or in cloud weather.
Back in 2018, the Russian military did showcase reconnaissance drones in the form of owls and falcons especially designed for covert reconnaissance and target designation. Nevertheless, the photo of the alleged Russian biomorphic drone that was shared by Ukrainian media is manipulated.
A reverse search revealed that the photo in fact shows an unidentified biomorphic drone that crashed near Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, all the way back in 2016. The photo was simply flipped horizontally by Ukrainian media.
There is no indication that the photo was just being used illustratively, as some Ukrainian sources went as far as watermarking it.
Why Ukrainian media is now making claims about Russian biomorphic drones is unclear, but one possibility is that Kiev is trying to attract attention to its growing drone problem.
In recent months, the Russian military expanded the use of drones significantly. Ukraine’s air defense network was badly affected. Kiev has been pleading with its allies in the West for more air defenses for a while now, with very little response. Someone in Ukraine might have thought that a propaganda stunt about some crazy Russian bird drone may be what they need to get more support from the public in the West.
