On January 23, the Russian military captured another settlement from Kiev forces in the direction of Vovchansk in Kharkiv, further expanding its control along the border with the region.
Siminovka, located around five kilometers to the south of Vovchansk, was captured by the Sever [North] Group of Forces, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, which noted that the 82nd Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 6th Guards Combined Arms Army’s 69th Motorized Rifle Division led the attack on the settlement.
“FPV (first-person view) drone operators cut off logistics and destroyed firepower of the AFU (Armed Forces of Ukraine) formations. The strikes were delivered at logistic routes and closed firing positions of the enemy,” the ministry said in a statement.
“Before the assault actions, Msta-B and Giatsint-B howitzer crews hit the enemy’s strongholds. As a result of decisive actions, our assault groups mopped up AFU positions,” it continued.
“Servicemen of the 82nd Motorized Rifle Regiment performed the task in small groups led by UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), thus preventing the enemy from making a maneuver. Some of the militants surrendered along with the wounded, who received all the necessary medical assistance,” the ministry added.
Before capturing Siminovka, the Sever Group of Forces broke through Ukrainian defenses in Hrafske to the northwest of the settlement, and reached the Siverskyi Donets River.
Russian troops have already captured most of Hrafske, and Kiev forces could lose the settlement in the matter of a few days.
The Russian advance in this area was expected. Last month, Ukraine lost control of Prylipka, which is located along the Siverskyi Donets to the west of Vovchansk. The collapse of Ukrainian defenses began from there.
To the east of Vovchansk, a similar slow collapse is taking place, with the Sever Group of Forces expanding its control in Vovchanski Khutory. The western part of the settlement and most of its center are already under control. Fighting is now mainly in the eastern part of the settlement.
The Sever Group of Forces also advanced further to the east of Vovchansk, mainly around Dehtyarne, capturing a long strip of the border west of the settlement.
Recent Russian advances show that Kiev forces no longer have the resources to maintain the current front in the Vovchansk. The Sever Group of Forces is taking advantage of this and pushing forward, mainly to expand the security zone along the border.
A complete Ukrainian collapse in this direction is unlikely, but Kiev forces are set to lose control over the border strip between Vovchansk and Dehtyarne.
