The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) continue to suffer losses in air defense equipment as a result of Russian drone strikes.
On October 17 and 18, two videos documenting recent Russian attacks with Lancet loitering munitions, commonly described as suicide drones, on AFU air defense sites surfaced online.
The first video shows an attack on a Soviet-made S-300PS long-range air-defense system of the AFU that was deployed in the Zaporozhye region. During the attack, a Lancet loitering munition destroyed a transporter erector launcher (TEL), of the 5P85D or the 5P85S type, while another took out an inactive 36D6 long-range radar.
The second video shows a Lancet loitering munition destroying an active 36D6 long-range radar of the AFU near the front in the Kherson region.
The Lancet was developed by the ZALA Aero Group to detect, track and engage static and moving targets. For that purpose, the loitering munition is equipped with an elector-optical system.
An improves version of the Lancet-3, that features a more aerodynamic design with extended X-shaped wings, was apparently used in the strikes. This version has a longer range and endurance than the original Lancet-3, which has a range of 40 kilometers and an endurance of up to 40 minutes only.
The Russian military has been using the Lancet and several other types of loitering munitions against the AFU since the beginning of its special operation in Ukraine to a great effect. Most of the recent strikes with the Lancet targeted Ukrainians air defense equipment.

These radars were Russian made. Are you saying that America bought them from Russia and sent them to Ukropizdan?

But mainly these systems are obsolete versions made in USSR. Most valuable units are quite numerous “Buks-M1” and few “Tors”. S-300PS (PMU is export version) has small range compared to next modifications, just 75 km. PMU-1 from Slovakia — 150 km. PMU-2 — up to 250 km. Old missiles works worse and have a tendency to attack residential building instead targets. Old radars works not better, they can’t detect/track small targets — drone is attacking AA while reconnaissance UAV is flying right above the position. The only reason they (and some planes) are working until now is that they were covered in shelters or abroad in first days of the operation.
Ex Warsaw pact countries send them to Ukraine in exchange for new US made equivalent courtesy of US taxpayers + 10% for the big guy.

Amazing that these systems were still operational. They should all have been taken down in the first days of the war, giving the RuAF air superiority over the skies over Ukraine. Why this did not happen is a mystery to me and whoever commands the RuAF should have had his head chopped off by Putin for his incompetence.

Prior to the Russian SMO, Ukraine had more than 100 batteries of S-300 alone (not counting what remained in Crimea). Many of them were nonoperational and kept in storage. They repaired some since last February and put them to use.
After Russia, Ukraine had the most formidable multi-layered air defence network in Europe (inherited from the USSR). Though old, we see how those systems (and even older ones) work nicely with a little upgrade, like in Syria.
80 batteries of old S-300 and many “Buks-M1”, “Osas” and few “Tors”. Syrian army has much newer units, “Buk-M2”, S-300PM-2 (replaced with S-400 and given for free to Syria), MiG-29M2, “Iskander” with ballistic missiles, though Syria has less much numbers due obvious reasons.

Apparently Russia has a cost effective drone killing interceptor with the Pantsir ground based system. I think Germany armaments company, whoever took over the Swiss rapid gun fire maker Oerlikon also have it.
No air based interceptor is likely to be cost effective against drones, absolutely not a human pilot based one, too much training time. Probably drone interceptors are being researched.
EMP and auto cannons work on small drones. I doubt old Soviet era S-300’s like the Uke’s have the software to see small drones as a threat and even if they did their missiles wouldn’t even arm in time to take one out at such close range. S-300 radars in the Russian integrated air defence system can see small drones as a threat however the battle management software would delegate that threat to a Pantsir or an EW unit which is equipped to deal with such threats
