Kiev forces lost more than 1,500 troops while withdrawing from the strategic town of Avdeevka in Donetsk in the last 24 hours, the Russian Ministry of Defense said on February 18.
Earlier, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu reported to Putin on the complete liberation of Avdeevka by the Tsentr Group of Forces.
According to the ministry, as a result of the successful Russian operation an area of 31.75 square kilometers, including Avdeevka, was liberated.
MoD spokesman Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov said that the Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Alexander Syrsky’s order to abandon Avdeevka was issued only 24 hours after Ukrainian troops began their uncontrolled withdrawal from the town.
“The order of the Ukrainian commander-in-chief Syrsky to abandon the town was issued only one day after the uncontrolled flight of Ukrainian troops from Avdeyevka began,” he said.
Only a few scattered units of Ukrainian troops managed to leave Avdeevka under the fire of Russian troops, abandoning their weapons, according to the spokesman.
“At present, measures are being taken to finally clear the city of militants, to block the Ukrainian units that left the city and entrenched themselves in the Avdeevka coke and chemical plant,” Konashenkov added.
Russian troops continued to deploy in Avdeevka, according to new videos. Footage showing FPV drone strikes on Ukrainian troops attempting to flee the town on foot were also posted to social media.
Recent reports indicate that the Russian military is preparing to quickly expand its operation to the north and west of Avdeevka so as not to allow Kiev forces to establish a new line of defense.
The Russian victory in Avdeevka was a major blow to the Kiev regime which vowed to defend the town on numerous occasions in recent months. The Ukrainian defeat also came just after the failure of the so-called spring counteroffensive, which was financed with tens of billions of dollars from the United States and other allies of Kiev.
