On February 7, Russian Defense Minister Army General Sergei Shoigu held conference call with the leadership of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
In his speech, Russian Army General revealed that the losses of the Ukrainian military in January amounted to more than 6.5 thousand servicemen.
Despite military assistance to the AFU from Western countries, the Russian military is inflicting heavy losses to the Ukrainian Army. As for the military equipment, in January 2023 alone, the AFU lost:
- 26 warplanes,
- 7 helicopters,
- 208 UAVs,
- 341 tanks and other armored fighting vehicles,
- 40 combat vehicles of multiple rocket launchers.
The head of the Russian military department noted that the United States and its allies are trying to prolong the conflict in Ukraine.
“To do this, they have started supplying heavy offensive weapons, openly calling on Ukraine to seize our territories. In fact, such steps involve NATO countries in the conflict and can lead to an unpredictable level of escalation,” the Russian Defense Minister said.
In their turn, Russian forces continue to grind all weapons and equipment supplied to Kiev both on its delivery routes and in combat positions.
“Realizing that it will not be possible to defeat Russia by military means, the Ukrainian leadership continues to resort to criminal actions to intimidate citizens in the new Russian regions. The armed forces of Ukraine strike residential areas, hospitals, places where civilians are gathering, commit terrorist acts targeting state and social facilities,” Shoigu said.
The Minister reminded that the Ukrainian side refused to cease fire during the Orthodox Christmas, and the Ukrainian military conducted intense shelling during the holiday. In total, the AFU fired over 550 artillery and mortar shells. Ukrainian artillery was suppressed by the return fire of Russian troops.
The Russian Minister confirmed that in January 2023, as a result of the offensive actions of Russian troops in the Donetsk and Zaporozhye directions, the settlements of Soledar, Kleshcheyevka, Podgornoye, Krasnopolye, Blagodatnoye, Lobkovoye and Nikolaevka were liberated. Currently, military operations are successfully developing in the areas of Ugledar and Artemovsk (also known as Bakhmut).

Taking the latter, the losses on average should have been around 250’000 to 400’000 per year, thus 20’000 to 30’000 per month.
What the russian defense ministry reports about january 2023 is thus at about 1/3 to 1/5 of the average…
…OR the stipulated average is about 3 to 5 fold above the real average.
From the two news reports alone (inclusive their links to external sources), it is impossible for me to tell which version being more near reality.
Of course, january 2023 could have been an exceptionally week performance of the russian side… But: Judging from the propagandistic main line, that january should have been rather strong in comparison to previous months, were we saw so many (three) big defeats.

Presumably the defence minister is quoting verifiable data. The statistics however questionable are frightening. We are talking about KIA/WIA rates much higher than the second world war casualty rates on the western battlefields. Where are the Metternichs and Talleyrands to end this nonsense? All armies do exaggerate enemy losses and both Ukrainian and Russian armed forces are not making any exception at all.
Evgeny Prigozhin, the owner of Russia’s Wagner Group, told journalists on Thursday that the mercenary company has stopped recruiting prisoners to fight in the war in Ukraine.
“The recruitment of prisoners into Wagner Group has completely stopped. All obligations to those who currently work for us are being fulfilled,” Prigozhin said. He did not provide a reason for why the practice is ending.
On Wednesday, the independent outlet Agentstvo reported that Russian authorities have been pressuring prisoners into joining Wagner Group by threatening to open new criminal cases against them, while earlier this week, the independent news site Mediazona published a report detailing Wagner’s difficulties recruiting prisoners in recent months amid rumors about the group’s high casualty rates.
