On January 9, the Russian military expanded its control along the right bank of the Haichur River to the north of the city of Huliapole in Zaporozhye, by securing one settlement and storming another.
The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that Zelene, located right to the north of Huliapole, was fully secured by the 394th Guards Motorized Rifle Regiment of the Vostok [East] Group of Forces’ 5th Combined Arms Army.
“Assault detachments captured an enemy area of defense on the territory of more than eight square kilometers. Air reconnaissance detected concealed positions and upcoming reserves of the enemy,” the ministry said in a statement.
According to the ministry, Kiev forces launched five counterattacks by separate assault groups in an attempt to regain lost positions in the settlement. Nevertheless, the attacks were all repelled as a result of “competent actions” of Russian troops.
The “AFU (Armed Forces of Ukraine) lost a large amount of manpower and hardware,” the ministry added, noting that “the liberation of Zelenoye is an important tactical achievement.”
Further to the north along the Haichur, the Vostok Group of Forces stormed Pryluky. According to preliminary reports, the settlement has been captured.
It’s worth noting that Kiev forces launched multiple counterattacks from Pryluky in recent days, even made attempts to cross into the left bank of the Haichur from there in a bid to reach Rivnopillya. All of these attacks were repelled by Russian troops, however.
With Zelene secured, and Pryluky nearly under control, it is safe to assess that Ukraine has lost the defense line along the right bank of the Haichur.
Kiev forces presence there is not limited to a small stretch of land to the north of Bratske, and Olenokostiantynivka, which is located between Zelene and Pryluky. Both of these areas will likely be secured by the Vostok Group of Forces within a few days.
Once the Haichur line is secured in full, the Russian military will likely accelerate advance from the river and Huliapole towards Orikhiv, a key logistics and command hub of Kiev forces. Ukraine has already brought in reinforcements in anticipation of this.
