On August 26, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched one of the most massive attacks on the Ukrainian territory. Russian drones and missiles pounded Ukrainian military and industrial infrastructure across the country. Russian forces launched several waves of devastating strikes within a few hours. Dozens of Ukrainian cities were covered with smoke as a result of large explosions.
According to preliminary estimations, more than 60 Russian missiles and 100 UAVs were launched in the morning. According to Ukrainian monitoring sources, 11 TU–95MS bombers took off from Russian airfields. Additionally, the takeoff of 6 TU–22M3 aircraft as well as MiG-31 carriers of hypersonic missiles were reported. A submarine, 2 frigates and a cruiser went to sea, preparing for the strikes. At least 4 carriers of Kalibr missiles with a total salvo of up to 28 missiles were spotted operating in the Black Sea.
Before the missiles were launched, Russian kamikaze UAVs were circling around the country, revealing the positions of Ukrainian air defense systems, forcing the Armed Forces of Ukraine to waste precious western missiles, and launching strikes on various targets.
According to preliminary reports, about 75 strikes were recorded throughout the country. The number of successful strikes is comparable to the massive attacks on the first months of the Russian Special Military Operation. The devastating results of Russian attacks may be explained by the depletion of Ukrainian air defense, despite the ongoing supplies of additional air defense systems by NATO countries. The number of confirmed strikes in Ukraine as a result of today’s attack may grow because a lot of targets are yet to be disclosed.
According to preliminary information published in open sources, the following cities and their regions came under attack:

- Lutsk (3 strikes)

- Krivyi Rih (2 strikes)
- Zaporozhye (2 strikes)

- Mirgorod (1 strike)
- Chernihiv (1 strike)
- Poltava (1 strike)
- Kharkiv (4 strikes)

The Ukrainian military is busy counting Russian drones and missiles that the almighty Ukrainian air defense intercepted in dreams of their military command. Meanwhile, explosions continue throughout the country.

More details about the targets are yet to be revealed. They include military facilities, airfields, areas of deployment of air defense systems, energy substations etc.
For example, Aviatorskoe military airfield located near the city of Dnipro and Mirgorod airfield in the Poltava region came under Russian attacks. A military base from where Ukrainian units were transferred to different directions on the frontlines was struck in the Poltava region.
At least two Russian strikes were reported at Zhulyany airfield in Kyiv, where the US-made Patriots are deployed.
Ukrainian authorities confirmed that an industrial facility was struck in the Poltava region, while some logistics hub was destroyed in the city of Odessa. Dozens of trucks used by the Ukrainian military caught fire.

Trying to hide strikes on military facilities across the country, Kyiv is complaining to damage caused to the Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
The Ukrainian authorities confirm that facilities of the Ukrainian energy system were hit in Rivne, Poltava, Kyiv, Lutsk, Odessa. In particular, an underground gas storage facility in the city of Stryi in the Lviv region came under attack. There are reports about the destruction of energy infrastructure facilities in the Zaporozhye region.
A number of large substations were put out of operation from Dnipro to Ivano-Frankivsk. Emergency blackouts began throughout Ukraine. Railway traffic has been suspended in the country. More than a third of the electrified railways have been de-energized. Many mobile communication towers and communication centers were de-energized. There were also problems with water supply, including in four districts of the Ukrainian capital.

However, the main goal of devastating strikes on the energy system of Ukraine is to disrupt the energy supply to military and military–industrial infrastructure. The destruction of the fuel reserve and disruption of operation of the energy system directly affect the combat capability of the Ukrainian troops and the supply of weapons and military equipment from abroad to the frontlines. The Ukrainian military is forced to use diesel locomotives instead of electric ones, which turned out to be useless amid the constant strikes. The long-term shutdown of the energy infrastructure will significantly complicate logistics, as well as the repair of military equipment and the work of the entire Ukrainian industry aimed to support the military operations.
