Ukrainian forces have shot down one of their own MiG-29 fighter jets over the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic in a friendly fire accident, Deputy Chairman of the Russian State Duma Defense Committee revealed on January 8.
Dmitry Sablin, who is permanently present in the special military operation zone, said on his official Telegram channel that the Ukrainian fighter jet was shot down with a 9K33 Osa short-range air defense system near the city of Kurakhovo.
“A Ukrainian Osa missile air defense system downed its own, Ukrainian, MiG-29. We have got only slightly involved,” the senior lawmaker said.
A photo showing the wreckage of the downed MiG-29, which was painted in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, surfaced online on January 7. The fighter jet was apparently armed with at least one American-made AGM-88 HARM anti-radar missile when it was shot down.

The Ukrainian Air Force (UAF) inherited dozens of MiG-29s after the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, most of these fighter jets were in a poor condition.
Around 40 MiG-29 fighter jets were reportedly in service with the UAF prior to the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine in February of last year. Many of these fighter jets were later shot down or destroyed on the ground by the Russian military.
The UAF’s remaining MiG-29s are currently being used to attack radars with HARM missiles and intercept suicide drones with Soviet air-to-air missiles, like the R-73 and R-27. So far, these tactics have not seen any success.
It’s worth noting that Ukraine have been trying to secure more MiG-29 fighter jets from NATO states, namely Slovakia and Poland. If these efforts fail, the UAF will likely be left without any operational MiG-29 in the near future.

That happens always. Russian also shot down own planes in the start of the war against ukroshit infection. In fact, up to 65% airplanes and up to 25% of Heli’s were russian friendly fire in the first 2 months of war. Till russians got how to acquire the targets tracking ‘dissection’ in the proper way, because training in peace times is far from the real combat situations. But they learned fast and far better than the banderist trash.
