Ukraine struck the Chongar bridge, which links the Crimean Peninsula and the Kherson region, with British-made Storm Shadow missiles overnight into June 22, acting governor of Kherson, Vladimir Saldo, announced.
“The road surface on the bridges has been damaged. There are no human casualties,” the governor wrote on Telegram.
The governor noted that the bridge would be open for vehicles shortly, adding that traffic between the peninsula and Kherson Region is not disrupted as it has been temporarily diverted to another route.
Meanwhile, a representative of the military investigation Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Joint Grouping of Troops told the media that Ukraine fired four missiles at the bridge over the Chongar River.
“According to preliminary data, four strikes of unidentified missiles were recorded,” the report said.
During the inspection of the scene, elements of these missiles were seized. There was a marking on the nameplate that indicates that the missile was manufactured in France. Storm Shadow missiles are jointly produced by France and the United Kingdom.
“The fragments of missile are marked by the manufacturer MBDA France – the manufacturer of the Franco-British SCALP/Storm Shadow missiles, the industrial production of these long-range missiles has been established at this enterprise since 2003,” the report says.
The Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine, known as the GRU, indirectly took responsibility for the missile attack on the Chongar bridge.
“The strike on the Chongar bridge is a systematic activity of the security and defense forces. In the future, such work will be continued,” the representative of the GUR Andrey Yusov said on the air of the Ukrainian Channel 24.
The Chongar bridge was the shortest way to the city of Melitopol and was likely largely used by the Russian military to transfer supplies to the Zaporozhie sector. Amid the ongoing Ukrainian counteroffensive on the region frontlines, Kiev forces will likely continue attempts to disrupt Russian military supplies
Judging by the footage, the bridge will likely be repaired quickly. However, the strike on the Crimean territory by NATO missiles may cause another escalation.
The UK announced the delivery of Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine in May. At the time, Western officials told CNN that the kingdom received assurances from Kiev that these missiles will be used only within Ukrainian sovereign territory and not inside Russia.
The Storm Shadow is a low-observable, long-range, air-launched cruise missile developed since 1994 by Matra and British Aerospace, and now manufactured by MBDA. It features a GPS-aided inertial navigation system with a terrain profile matching system. For terminal guidance, the missile is equipped with an imaging infrared scene-mapping area correlator system.
The maximum range of the Storm Shadow is 560 kilometers. However, it is thought that Ukraine received the downgraded export version with a range of 250 kilometers. The Ukrainian Air Force has reportedly integrated the 1,300 kg cruise missile on its Soviet-era Su-24 fighter bombers.
Russian air defenses have already intercepted dozens of Storm Shadow missiles. A number of Ukrainian Su-24s which were modified to launch the long-range cruise missile were also either shot down in aerial combat or destroyed on the ground in missile strikes.
Two days ago, Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu warned that the Kiev regime was going to launch missile strikes on the territory of Russia, including Crimea, with the help of NATO weapon, claiming that such attacks would not remain unanswered.
“The use of these missiles outside the zone of a special military operation will mean a full—fledged involvement of the United States and Great Britain in the conflict and will entail immediate strikes on decision-making centers on the territory of Ukraine,” minister declared.
The strike on the Chongar bridge comes as Ukrainian troops are struggling to advance along the front in the Zaporozhye and south Donetsk sectors more than two weeks into their so-called spring counteroffensive. In recent days, Kiev forces stepped up shelling on Russian-held Kherson and reports of a near crossing operation over the Dnipro River were shared by several Russian and Ukrainian news sources. Ukraine may have struck the bridge to weaken Russian supply lines in Kherson before crossing the river.
