The United States plans to supply Ukraine with a more advanced version of Abrams main battle tanks, but without classified armor packages that include depleted uranium, Politico reported on January 26, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Earlier this week, President Joe Biden announced that the U.S. will send 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. The president said that the tanks are being sent to “enhance the Ukraine’s capacity to defend its territory and achieve its strategic objectives” and that the military aid package is intended to “defend and protect Ukrainian land. It is not an offensive threat to Russia.”
Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh specified that the tanks would be from the M1A2 version and as they are not available in excess in U.S. stocks, they would be purchased through Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.
The M1A2 version is equipped with an upgraded targeting system, an independent thermal sight for the tank commander and a battle management system that allows information sharing.
The key feature of this version is, however, second generation depleted uranium armor packages. According to Politico, these packages will be removed from the tanks which will be supplied to Kiv forces in line with U.S. federal rules, which forbid the exporting of this classified armor.
One U.S. defense official told Politico that the Pentagon is planning to provide Ukraine with the M1A2 version in an “exportable” form. This means that the classified armor will be replaced with what is called FMS [foreign military sales] armor packages.
The main armament of the M1A2 is the M256A1 120 mm smoothbore gun, designed by Rheinmetall AG of Germany, manufactured under license in the U.S. by Watervliet Arsenal. The M256A1 is an improved variant of the Rheinmetall 120 mm L/44 gun carried on the German-made Leopard 2 on all variants up to the Leopard 2A5, the difference being in thickness and chamber pressure.
The gun typically fires the depleted uranium M829 armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot. It is unclear yet if these rounds will be supplied to Ukraine.
Rather than sending Ukraine tanks from its own stocks, the U.S. has said it is buying the Abrams from industry, meaning they won’t arrive on the battlefield for many months, or potentially years, given industrial constraints in upgrading them.
Washington hopes that the battle tanks will provide Kiev forces with an edge over the Russian military, who has been conducting a special operation in Ukraine for nearly a year now.
The U.S. decision to arm Ukraine with the Abrams was mainly meant to encourage European NATO states to supply advanced main battle tanks, namely the Leopard 2, to prepare Kiev forces for a counter-attack next spring.

With these tanks taking absolute ages to arrive at the scrapyard now known as Ukraine, the war will be over and they will no longer be needed by the Kiev junta that ceases to exist.
I can bet that the Russian admin will be very interested in receiving some of these Abrams tanks for inspection. It will be interesting to see how these tanks stand up to a real enemy, with real commitment, real training, and real weapons. Up to now, the Abrams have been fighting tribesmen.
