The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched another series of strikes throughout Ukraine. On the night of January 22nd, Russian drones reached their targets in several Ukrainian rear regions. The Ukrainian military abstained from massive strikes.
According to the Ministry of the Russian Federation, only eight Ukrainian UAVs targeted Russian rear regions last night. All of them were destroyed by Russian air defense, including:
- 6 UAVs in the Rostov region;
- 1 UAV in the border Kursk region;
- 1 UAV in the Voronezh region.
The night attack was insignificant comparing to the massive Ukrainian strikes launched in different directions the night before. In total, on January 21th, the Russian military reported the interception of 82 Ukrainian drones during the day and at night. Strikes were launched in several waves throughout the day. All attacks were successfully repelled.
Ukrainian drone strikes are often aimed at probing Russian defense and revealing positions of Russian air defense systems. Yesterday, several waves of strikes targeted the Crimean peninsula. Also Russian air defense forces are repelling Ukrainian drones in the southern Rostov region almost daily. Taking into account the directions of Ukrainian strikes and operations of NATO reconnaissance in the Black Sea region, another large-scaled combined attack on the Russian southern regions should not be excluded, as well as provocations aimed at disrupting the operation of the Turkish Stream pipeline. In their turn, Russian forces continue precision strikes on Ukrainian rear infrastructure. According to local monitoring sources, the night attack mainly targeted Ukrainian military airfields.
According to preliminary reports, the targets included military airfields in the Kirovograd, Cherkassy, Zhitomir and Khmelnitskyi regions. Explosions were reported in the areas. The Starokonstantinov military airfield, where the NATO military supplies military equipment, including its long-range missiles, also reportedly came under attack.
Russian strikes were recorded in the Mykolaiv region and the mayor of Kyiv confirmed another attack in the city revealing no details.
