Ukraine unveiled on August 25 a new long-range, land-attack version of its domestically developed cruise missile Neptune.
The new missile, dubbed “Long Neptune,” has a range of 1,000 kilometers, according to Ukrainian media, which didn’t share any other details about its specifications.
The original R-360 Neptune is an subsonic anti-ship cruise missile with a range just over 200 kilometers. In 2023, Ukraine fired a land-attack version of the missile, which was dubbed by some analysts the Neptune-MD. Its range was also reported to be 1,000 kilometers.
Long Neptune appears to be much larger than the R-360. It measures over six meters in length without its initial launch booster, approximately 1.5 meters longer than the original missile.
The diameter of the missile’s central fuselage has also been enlarged, approximately from 380 mm to 500 mm. This was likely done to increase the fuel capacity of the missile.
It is unclear what are the differences between the Long Neptune and the so-called Neptune-MD. In fact, there is a big chance that they are the very same missile and that the Ukrainians reintroduced the weapon in order to send some message to Russia.
Last week, Ukraine unveiled a locally-made, ground-launched cruise missile dubbed Flamingo with an alleged range of 3,000 kilometers and a warhead weighing around 1,150 kg. A report also revealed that the United States approved the sale of an air-launched guided bomb-cruise missile hybrid, dubbed the Extended Range Attack Munition (ERAM), to Kiev with a range of 463 kilometers and a warhead weighing 260 kg.
The recent announcements on long-range weapons, which are allegedly capable of reaching Moscow, seem a part of a calculated strategy to put some pressure on Russia as it prepares to engage in higher-level talks with Ukraine.
There were doubts about the performance of some of these weapons, especially the Flamingo, as well as about the ability to mass produce them.
Kiev said that it was planning to produce seven Flamingo missiles a day in two months. Meanwhile, the ERAM deal with the US is reported to include 3,350 missiles.
The Neptune’s land-attack version has already seen some use by Kiev forces. However, it didn’t perform so well, and there is no evidence confirming the reported range. The Russian Ministry of Defense regularly announces the successful interception of missiles of this type. On top of that, multiple launchers were destroyed in Russian missile and drone strikes.
