On February 20, Kiev forces attempted to advance close to the Haichur River line in Zaporizhzhia at least seven times, a part of the counterattack that began last week. However, they were pushed by the Russian military’s Vostok [East] Group of Forces.
The advance attempts were led by the 95th Rifle Division, 225th Separate Assault Regiment, 82nd Air Assault Brigade, 425th Separate Assault Regiment, and the 210th Separate Assault Regiment.
Troops from these formations attempted to advance near Hai, Andreevka, Sosnovka, Novoolexandrovka, Zaliznichnoe, and Vozdvizhevka. The Ukrainian troops moved in armored personnel vehicles (APC), and all-terrain vehicles, taking advantage of bad weather conditions. Still, they were pushed back by the Vostok Group of Forces.
The group’s reconnaissance means detected the advance attempt early on, and Ukrainian troops were quickly targeted with drones and artillery.
The advance attempts were costly for Kiev forces. Two groups of troops were eliminated, and at least two APCs were destroyed.
Despite taking heavy losses since the start of the counterattack in Zaporizhzhia last week, Kiev forces have not yet recaptured any key settlement close to the Haichur. The Vostok Group of Forces continues to expand control to the west of the key city of Huliaipole, and remains in control of both banks of the river up to Bratske and Andriivka
The intensity of the counterattack decreased in recent days, which suggest that the Ukrainian formations involved are losing their combat capabilities.
Still, Kiev will likely pressure its forces to make more advance attempts. The deployment of additional reinforcements to make up for recent losses is highly likely, although it could weaken Ukrainian defenses in other directions. Any pause by Kiev forces right now would allow a Russian response, and the Vostok Group of Forces could advance fast to the west of the Haichur.
All in all, it seems that Kiev has put its forces in Zaporizhzhia in a very difficult position. The costly counterattack could eventually lead to a collapse, on the Ukrainian side.
