Unidentified drones in Europe
At least four large drones disrupted operations at Copenhagen Airport in Denmark for four hours. This resulted in 51 flights being diverted and 109 being cancelled, affecting 20,000 passengers. UAVs also caused Stockholm Airport in Sweden to suspend operations for over three hours. NATO E-3 AWACS long-range radar detection and target designation aircraft were deployed to locate and eliminate the drones. However, none of the drones were shot down and they disappeared in an unknown direction.
It is easy to guess who might be interested in this provocation. Strategically, both Ukraine and the EU are interested in prolonging the military conflict as this enables them to obtain the necessary funding to implement defence programmes. Any deterioration in citizens’ standard of living or major incidents could be blamed on Russia’s “hostile” actions. So, in the near future, discussions about strengthening the air defence of the Scandinavian countries and increasing military spending may well begin. Let’s not forget that it is ordinary citizens who will ultimately pay for all this through budgetary stimulus, inflation and tax increases.
There are problems with recruiting personnel for the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has released an official statement regarding the deployment of aviation technicians to assault units within the ground forces. According to the General Staff, this is to bolster the Ground and Airborne Assault Forces, given the challenging situation on the front line and the shortage of infantry. After receiving the necessary training at training centres, individual servicemen from the Air Force and other military branches are deployed to the front lines.
Conversely, narrow-profile specialists who have received foreign training in the operation of foreign equipment, such as F-16 fighter jets, are banned from being sent to the infantry.
This decision by the Ukrainian command highlights severe staffing issues within the ground forces. Total mobilisation is offset by a high desertion rate and low motivation among those recruited. This forces the Air Force to deploy technical and support personnel to the front lines. Clearly, the level of combat training of such specialists is completely unsuitable for direct combat operations.
Meanwhile, the situation on the front lines continues to deteriorate for Ukraine.
Sumy sector – Russian army assault troops are completing the capture of Yunakovka village in the Sumy region. The village is defended by the 47th Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, considered to be elite and highly combat-ready, with the support of foreign mercenaries. However, only 10% of the village remains under Ukrainian control. Without additional forces being transferred from other sections of the front, it will not be possible to hold or completely recapture the village. If the Russian army is successful here, it may develop its offensive to the southeast towards Kiyanitsa. This village is located near the forest surrounding the city of Sumy from the north and east. As in the Sever direction, it is likely that the Russian Armed Forces command will prefer to advance in forested terrain in this area. This slows down the advance, but sharply reduces the risk of being hit by FPV drones, allowing troops to be concentrated in a narrow sector.
It should be noted that Russian troops are actively supported by air strikes. Bombing raids have been carried out on Ukrainian military positions in Orekhove, Grigorivka, Lukyanivka, Magdalynivka, Balabino, Primorske and Solianky in the Sumy region.
Kharkiv sector – The situation on the front line remains unchanged, with both sides continuing to engage in active combat operations. Over the past 24 hours, losses were reported from three Ukrainian Armed Forces brigades operating in this area: up to 200 personnel, one tank and 12 vehicles. Moscow continues to adhere to its ‘thousand cuts’ strategy, maintaining tension along the entire front line. The aim is to quickly exhaust the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ reserves, which are being used as firefighting teams in crisis areas.
Kupyansk sector – It is reported that Russian Armed Forces units have occupied Stepovaya Novoselovka. Russian army assault troops may soon begin breaking through the Ukrainian forces’ defensive positions on the Peschanoye–Glushkovka line.

Seversk sector – On 23 September, Russian assault groups approached the north-eastern outskirts of Seversk, capturing the area around Mine No. 6. The nearby village of Serebryanka had been captured just a few days earlier. This direction of attack is extremely challenging from an operational point of view. Seversk is protected from the northeast by four large reservoirs and several smaller ones, which significantly narrows the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ defensive line by utilising natural barriers. Russian units may attempt to advance westward, which would enable them to enter the city from the north via the most favourable route.

The encirclement of Seversk from the south continues. Russian advance units have captured the village of Pereezdnoe, enabling them to advance through Zvanovka and Svyato-Pokrovskoye towards the southern outskirts of the city.
Kramatorsk sector – The Russian Armed Forces have advanced in the direction of Pleshcheyevka, particularly the advanced units of the 33rd Motorised Rifle Berlin Don Cossack Regiment of the 20th Guards Motorised Rifle Division. Capturing this settlement will enable them to launch an assault on the sizeable village of Konstantinovka from the south. This suggests the Russian command’s plan for the upcoming 2025–26 winter campaign. Specifically, this involves capturing the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration with two converging strikes: one through Konstantinovka and Druzhkivka, which could lead to the encirclement of Kramatorsk from the south; and the other through Seversk and Liman, targeting Slavyansk from the north. This would enable a significant portion of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to be encircled. Furthermore, the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration is the Ukrainian army’s main stronghold in the entire Donbas region, so capturing it will require the Russian command to demonstrate the highest degree of operational skill.

Pokrovsk sector – There have been no reports of active combat operations or advances by Russian armed forces in this area over the past 24 hours. This lull is probably because the Russian command is regrouping and redeploying additional reserves to put more pressure on the Ukrainian army in the coming days.
Southern sector – The results of an objective assessment of Russian strikes on dual-use warehouses in Dnipro have been published online. Since the start of the war, Ukraine has been trying to preserve its army’s material resources by storing them in ‘civilian’ facilities, such as large logistics centres, warehouses and shopping malls. Civilian trucks and lorries are also used for transportation, which could lead to Russia’s leadership being accused of war crimes if they are destroyed. At the same time, powerful explosions resulting from strikes on storage facilities for ‘civilian’ goods or materials do not raise any questions among Western countries.
Russian aircraft have also attacked the Motor Sich plant in Zaporizhzhia. The plant previously manufactured aircraft engines and gas turbine units. Following the outbreak of conflict, however, it switched to producing spare parts for drones and other military products. Notably, Zaporizhzhia had not previously been targeted by guided aerial bombs. However, as the front line approaches this major regional centre, air strikes on targets within the city will only become more intense.
For the second day in a row, Russian aircraft have been highly active near Huliaipole. On 22 September, a FAB-3000 bomb equipped with a universal planning and correction module was used to destroy a temporary deployment point belonging to a unit of the Ukrainian army’s 141st separate mechanized brigade in the village of Gavrilovka. Notably, the FAB-3000 is the most powerful Russian aerial bomb used in the conflict in Ukraine.
Russian aviation is also targeting the village of Novonikolaevka. Three strongholds of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were destroyed using FAB-500 aerial bombs. Russian Armed Forces are expected to intensify their assault operations in the near future as part of their advance towards Huliaipole. Novoiivanivka was captured a few days earlier and, after regrouping, Russian units may begin their assault on Novonikolaivka in the coming days.
Conclusion: Not only in Ukraine, but also in various European countries, there is a growing trend of UAV activity. Earlier in September, there was a high-profile incident involving drones crashing into false targets in Poland. Then, on 22 September, unknown UAVs paralysed airport operations in Scandinavia. Further provocations aimed at drawing third countries into the conflict cannot be ruled out.
On the front lines of the Ukrainian conflict, the situation for Kyiv remains challenging. In an attempt to compensate for the shortage of personnel in the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ ground units, the General Staff has decided to transfer technical personnel from the Ukrainian Air Force to the infantry. However, the effectiveness of this decision is questionable, as engineers are initially trained for other purposes.
The Russian army continues to put pressure on the most important sections of the front line, while the Ukrainian Armed Forces remain on the defensive and seek to wear out the advancing units. Notably, the Russian Air Force was more active than usual in the southern sector yesterday, especially near Huliaipole. Additionally, the Motor Sich enterprise in Zaporizhzhia was hit by aviation bombs. There had previously been no bombings of the regional centre, but as the front line approaches and Ukrainian air defence resources deplete, the number of raids will only increase.
