Lebanon’s General Security thwarted an Israeli plot to carry out simultaneous bombings at commemorative events in the shrine of Hezbollah’s late Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and in the Sports City in Beirut, Lebanese media reported on October 9.
According to the reports published by Al Modon, Bint Jbeil and other Lebanese news websites, the plot was orchestrated by a foreign individual named “Martin,” residing in Germany.
Investigations revealed that he was the primary operator, communicating with network members through encrypted applications, with the members unaware of each other’s identities. The General Security was reportedly able to confirm his ties to Israeli intelligence.
The case began with the arrest of a Syrian-Ukrainian dual national who is married to a Ukrainian woman. An explosive device disguised as a battery, intended to be concealed in a motorcycle, was found in his possession.
Subsequent investigations by the General Security led to the discovery of an explosive-laden car in the city of Batroun to the north of Beirut.
In a special operation, General Security forces carried out a series of raids in the towns of Aramoun, Khalde, and Doha aAl-Hos, detaining several suspects of Lebanese, Syrian, and Palestinian nationalities. At least one of three Lebanese nationals who got arrested also holds a German citizenship. The total number of detainees has reached five so far.
The General Security has reportedly briefed President Joseph Aoun on the details of the plot and the security operation that foiled it. It was agreed to hold a press conference in the coming days to disclose further details of the plot.
The events at Nasrallah shrine and the Sports City were meant to commemorate the second anniversary of Hezbollah’s last conflict with Israel, which the group started a day after the Hamas-led October 7 surprise attack from the Gaza Strip in 2013.
The plot was not likely just an act of revenge by Israel. It was either meant to draw Hezbollah into responding to justify a new Israeli war on Lebanon, or even to provoke a conflict between the group and the new Islamist-led government in neighboring Syria after framing it as the perpetrator.
In any case, the plot came at a critical time for Hezbollah, which is currently facing serious pressure from the Lebanese government to disarm. In addition, a ceasefire brokered by the United States in November remains one-sided, with the Israeli launching strikes against the group on a near-daily basis.
Adding to Hezbollah’s problems is the ceasefire that entered into effect in Gaza on October 9, which will allow Israel to focus again on Lebanon.
All in all, the bombings plot is a sign that Israel wants to escalate against Hezbollah again. Israel has always favored going to war in Lebanon in good weather conditions. With winter nearing, a confrontation between the two may be just around the corner.

this has a risk of being the last straw for israeli citizens. the vast majority of israeli citizens are war weary. netanyahu’s insatiable bloodlust and political stunts are already tired, to say the least. israel is already a broken country. i don’t see how perpetual wars will go over well domestically.
