Ukrainian defenses between the directions of Kharkiv and Donetsk are not holding up, with reports from September 19 revealing more advances by the Russian military.
In Kharkiv, the Zapad [West] Group of Forces made more gains inside Kupyansk. Work is ongoing to completely secure high-rise buildings in the northern parts of the city where Kiev forces maintain fortified positions. Advance was also reported in the eastern outskirts of Kupyansk.
Keep Kupyansk is slowly turning into a priority for Ukraine, which will likely push more reinforcement to the city. Kiev forces are showing fierce resistance, but their situation is getting more complicated by the day. Any Russian breakthrough towards the southern part of the city, possibly from the eastern outskirts, could further worsen their situation.
To the south in Donetsk, Russian troops advanced to the south of Shandryholove, as well as to the northwest and west of Torskoe.
The advance in these two areas could distract Kiev forces in Yampol, further to the south. The Zapad Group of Forces has already broken through three lines of defenses and reached the settlement from its eastern direction. The Ukrainian mined nearby forests, but this didn’t stop Russian troops. A push within the settlement is to be expected.
A little to the east, along the border with Luhansk, Russian troops also advanced, capturing a large portion of the forest on the northern bank of the Donetsk-Siversk River.
The increasing Russian operations from Yampol to the Serebrianka forest threatens Kiev forces in Siversk. Any additional attack from the southern direction could significantly worsen the Ukrainian defense stance around the key city.
The situation of Kiev forces in the Kostiantynivka pocket to the southwest of Siversk is not any better. Russian troops pushed forward from Oleksandro-Shul’tyne, along the railway, approaching the southeastern outskirts of Kostiantynivka. The troops could reach the southern outskirts of the city within days, if the Ukrainians kept retreating.
Further to the east in Donetsk, Russian troops continue to advance in Pokrovsk, making sizable progress in the western part of the city and pushing into its center from the direction of Troyanda, which is located right to the south.
Kiev forces are resisting, but they are reported to be taking heavy losses. Over the past day at least two Ukrainian main battle tanks were reportedly destroyed in the city.
It’s worth noting that Pokrovsk is seeing intense use of drones by the Russian military. Recent footage showed dozens of strikes from the city and other areas in Donetsk.
While Kiev forces are resisting between Kharkiv and Donetsk, their defensive operations are becoming less effective, and they are still incapable of conducting any serious counterattack. Worsening weather conditions could play in their favor in coming months, but this will not completely stop the Russian military.
