A Ukrainian drone struck a monastery in the Russian region of Kursk on July 19, killing one person, the regional governor Alexei Smirnov said on the Telegram app.
The Mash Telegram news channel later reported that a 60-year-old male parishioner had died in the morning after a drone fired eight projectiles at the St. Nicholas Belogorsky Monastery in Gornal, a settlement located close to the Ukrainian border.
This was not the first Ukrainian drone attack to target Russian territories in less than 24 hours. Russian air defense foiled an attack over the night of July 18 and 19, shooting down 19 suicide drones, according to the Russian Ministry of Defenses.
At least 11 drones were shot down over the Kursk region and three others over the region of Belgorod, the ministry said in a statement, adding that five additional drones were shot down over the Black Sea and the Crimean Peninsula.
Russian media didn’t report any casualties or material losses in Kursk, Belgorod or Crimea as a result of the failed Ukrainian attack.
The Kiev regime intensified attacks on Russia with the start of the year, damaging infrastructure and killing and wounding a number of civilians. The main aim of these attacks appears to be to make up for the never ending failures of Kiev forces in the battlefield.
In response, the Russian military resumed group strikes on military infrastructure and related energy facilities in Ukraine last March. The retaliatory strikes inflicted heavy losses on the country.
