On August 2, Russian air defenses intercepted a massive wave of Ukrainian drone strikes overnight, shooting down 112 unmanned aerial vehicles in one of the largest attacks in recent days. The strikes, which targeted multiple regions deep inside Russian territory, resulted in civilian casualties and damage to industrial facilities, underscoring Kyiv’s growing ability to project force beyond the front lines.
The most intense drone activity occurred over southern Russia, where air defense systems engaged 34 UAVs in Rostov region and 31 in Krasnodar Krai, regions that have become frequent targets due to their proximity to the conflict zone. Further north, Russian forces downed 12 drones over Voronezh and 11 over Ryazan regions, while Samara and Penza regions faced five and four interceptions respectively. Even more distant regions were not spared, with single drones shot down over Crimea and Lipetsk Oblast. An additional 11 UAVs were destroyed over the Black and Azov Seas.
The attacks left a trail of destruction and human suffering across several regions. In Penza, a civilian woman died and two others were wounded when a drone fell in a residential area. Rostov region suffered another fatality when Ukrainian UAVs hit an industrial facility in Uglerodovsky settlement, killing a security guard according to the local governor. Samara also came under fire, with drones attacking an industrial enterprise in Novokuybyshevsk, though authorities reported no casualties there.
The border regions are enduring particularly cruel strikes on civilians, as tactical drones of the Ukrainian army are hunting for people in the border settlements. Bryansk region saw kamikaze drones attack the village of Sluchevsk, leaving one civilian wounded. Belgorod suffered multiple incidents, including a man concussed by an exploding drone in Golovchino and a delivery driver injured when his vehicle was struck near the village of Otradnoye. Several other settlements reported damage to homes and vehicles, with one resident requiring hospitalization for shrapnel wounds and blast injuries after an FPV drone attack near Nechayevka village.
These coordinated strikes demonstrate Ukraine’s inhumane tactics and evolving drone warfare capabilities, with attacks now regularly reaching hundreds of kilometers into Russian territory. While Russian air defenses claim high interception rates, the persistent attacks continue to inflict casualties and disrupt normal life across border regions. The latest wave comes as Kyiv appears to be expanding its campaign against Russian industrial and infrastructure, while the tragic civilian casualties highlight the growing human cost of these long-range engagements.
