The Armed Forces of Ukraine are retreating from their last stronghold on the western outskirts of the Donetsk urban agglomeration, the town of Kurakhovo. All the roads away from the town are under close Russian fire control.
On December 10th, the People’s Militia of the Donetsk People’s Republic officially confirmed the full Russian control of the large industrial facility in the center of Kurakhovo, the local elevator. It is located on the southern shore of the water reservoir and control of its facilities allows to take fire control of a large part of the residential areas in the center of the town.
Fighters of the Russian 5th brigade raised the Russian flag over the elevator confirming the end of the mop up operation on its territory.
Battles continue in the center of Kurakhovo. The Russian military is in control of the quarters of private houses and are advancing on the streets, repelling Ukrainians from their hideout in the apartment buildings. Clashes are already ongoing along the Pushkina Street. According to local reports, more and more Ukrainian soldiers prefer hiding in the basements, awaiting for the Russians to come, and surrender. At the same time, Russian forces largely expanded their zone of control in the Southern district located on the southeastern outskirts of the town, where they are completing the mop up operations.
Ukrainian forces are retreating to the western part of Kurakhovo, where they are expected to turn the local industrial zone into another fortress. However, their defense there is also complicated by Russian advance on the northern share of the water reservoir. After the Russian army took control of Stary Terny, all the roads west of Kurakhovo came under their close fire control. The entire town, including the industrial zone may soon be surrounded and the remaining Ukrainian garrison will be grinded in another cauldron. If not allowed to timely retreat. But the Ukrainian military command is known for sacrificing its units in senseless bloody battles. According to reports from the front, there are Ukrainian barrier squads in the village of Dachnoe. They are aimed to prevent Ukrainian groups from retreating and open fire on Ukrainian soldiers, who abandon their positions.

The morale of the remaining Ukrainian garrison is low. Ukrainian social networks are full of video appeals of Ukrainian soldiers complaining on the situation in Kurakhovo. According to their claims, most of Ukrainian troops escaped to the western outskirts and the village of Dachnoe, including drone operators and groups on armored vehicles. The forcibly mobilised soldiers were abandoned in Kurakhovo as cannon fodder aimed to slow down Russian advance.
The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed Russian advance in the Kurskhovo direction. According to the official report, units of the Vostok (East) group of forces “improved their positions along the front line, defeated the formations of the mechanized brigade and two air defense brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the areas of the villages of Constantinople, Velikaya Novoselka, Neskuchnoye and Vremevka in the Donetsk People’s Republic.” Four Ukrainian counterattacks have been repelled over the past day.
The losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine amounted to 160 military personnel, an HMMWV armored combat vehicle and a 155 mm self-propelled artillery installation “Paladin” made in the USA, three vehicles, two 152 mm self-propelled artillery installations “Acacia”, 122 mm howitzer D-30, 122 mm self-propelled artillery installation “Gvozdika” and an electronic warfare station.
