On March 8, a MiG-29 fighter jet of the Ukrainian Air Force (UAF) was shot down over the Donetsk region, dozens of kilometers away from the frontline.
The fighter jet crashed near the city of Pokrovsk, some 45 kilometers to the northwest from the Russian-held city of Donetsk. The fate of the pilot remains unknown, but according to preliminary information he was not able to eject and died in the crash.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported the downing of a MiG-29 of the UAF in its daily briefing. Nevertheless, some Ukrainian news sources said that the fighter jet was downed by Ukrainian air defenses in a friendly-fire incident.
The UAF operated some 40 MiG-29A, MiG-29S, MiG-29MU1 and MiG-29MU2 before the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine more than two years ago. Many of these fighter jets were shot down or destroyed on the ground in the first weeks of the operation.
Last year, Ukraine received at least 27 MiG-29G and MiG-29AS from Poland and Slovakia which made up for some of its aerial losses.
The UAF has been mainly using its MiG-29s to intercept Russian Geran-1 and 2 suicide drones as well as to target Russian radar and air defense systems using American-made AGM-88 HARM anti-radiation missiles. Despite some upgrades, the fighter jets remain outdated and not that effective.
It is unknown how many MiG-29s are currently in service with the UAF. Over the past year, many were shot down by Russian air defenses and fighter jets. Last October, the Russian MoD reported the downing of seven Ukrainian MiG-29s in a single day.
Today, the UAF remains largely ineffective. Western attempts to revive Ukraine’s air power have so far seen very little success.
Ukraine is now awaiting the delivery of dozens of American-made F-16 fighter jets. While these warplanes are being touted as yet another “Wunderwaffe,” they will not likely make any real difference in the face of the vastly superior Russian air power.

soon it will be f-16 that are crashing and burning. perhaps the usadmin should send the f-35 instead? once the pilot has passed out, crashing ain’t so bad.
