The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) continue attempts to expand their foothold on the eastern bank of the Dnieper River in the Kherson region. Battles are ongoing in the village of Krynki, where Ukrainian forces are pounded by Russian artillery and aircraft. The Ukrainian military fails to expand the zone of control on the Russian bank; but despite absence of any victories, Ukrainian command continues sending reinforcements across to death across the river.
On December 4, Ukrainian command transferred units of the 37th Marine Brigade to the Kherson region. They were deployed in the area of Krynki, likely preparing for escalation of Ukrainian attacks on the Russian bank. Reserves are aimed to reinforce the units of the 36, 38 Brigades of Marines and 503 separate battalions of Marines of the AFU deployed in the region.
The Marine corps of the AFU have always been considered elite and one of the most experienced units in the Ukrainian Army. However, their operations on the eastern bank of the Dnieper did not bring any strategic victories.
The reinforcement of the Ukrainian grouping in the Kherson region means that Kiev does not plan to abandon attempts to break through Russian defense on the eastern bank. Assault operations in the steppes across the river require large forces and bring heavy losses. The ongoing battles have already resulted in heavy losses in the ranks of the Ukrainian elite units, and the deployment of more professionals in the south, while Russians are advancing in the Donbass, seems shortsighted. Kiev is likely aimed to achieve at least some gains to declare some local victories in the media amid the strategic defeat amid Russian advance.
