Early on October 8th, Anton Poliakov, a Ukrainian member of parliament died in a taxi after “falling ill”.
Police said that a forensic examination had been ordered to establish the cause of death.
Poliakov is involved in a probe into corruption in the defense sector. Anton Poliakov, 33, was a member of parliamentary group Party “For the Future”, having initially been elected to parliament as a member of the ruling Servant of the People party.
“Preliminary, police officers established that the man became ill in a taxi, emergency doctors tried to revive him, but pronounced him dead,” the police said in a statement.
The General Prosecutor’s Office said Poliakov was found unconscious in the back seat of a taxi, which was stopped by patrol police officers due to traffic violations.
The taxi driver said that the passenger got into his car near a public transport stop outside Kyiv downtown and then became ill, complaining of feeling nauseous.
“Valuables, documents, a mobile phone and money were found and confiscated,” the prosecutors said in a statement.
It said the taxi was taken for examination and the driver was being interrogated by investigators.
Who is Anton Polyakov?
Polyakov won the election in the 206th constituency in the Chernihiv region and joined the parliamentary faction “Servant of the People”.
On November 15, 2019, the faction expelled him from its membership. The People’s Deputy from the “Servant of the People” Ivan Shinkarenko said on the Rada channel that Polyakov’s exclusions were justified by his “unethical behavior within the faction.”
Polyakov himself stated in a comment to Radio Svoboda that he had been expelled from the faction for collecting signatures for a vote of no confidence in the then Prosecutor General Ruslan Ryaboshapka. He later joined the group “For the Future”.
In March 2020, the Verkhovna Rada voted in the first reading for the draft law on banks, which was necessary for cooperation with the International Monetary Fund. The document, among other things, made it impossible to return Privatbank to its former owners.
MPs made more than 16,000 proposals for amendments, which slowed down consideration of the bill. Anton Polyakov gave the most (over 6,000).
When the law was passed, Polyakov decided to challenge in court the actions of Verkhovna Rada Chairman Dmytro Razumkov and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Finance, Tax and Customs Policy Danylo Hetmantsev.
It is unclear if the death is an accident or premeditated, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Kiev attempts to pin it on Russia.
