A Russian woman was killed on May 23 after Kiev forces launched dozens of rockets and several drones at the region of Belgorde.
In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that air defenses intercepted 35 rockets and three drones over Belgorde overnight.
“Overnight, an attempt by the Kiev regime to carry out a terrorist act against facilities on Russian soil using Olkha and Vampire multiple rocket launcher systems [MLRS] as well as UAVs [unmanned aerial systems] was thwarted. Air defense forces on duty destroyed three Olkha MLRS projectiles, 32 Vampire MLRS projectiles and three UAVs over the Belgorod Region,” the ministry said.
Video footage posted to social networks showed what appears to be the successful interception of several rockets over Belgorod.
Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said that one of the Ukrainian drones fell on a house in the settlement of Krasny Vostok, killing a woman.
The governor also reported some material losses in the city of Belgorod and a number of settlements in the region’s countryside.
“A UAV was shot down over the settlement of Krasny Vostok. As a result of its fall and subsequent detonation, the second floor of a private residential building was destroyed. To our great grief, a woman died,” the governor said in a post on its official Telegram channel. “The body of the woman was found under the rubble. I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”
Ukraine intensified rocket and drone attacks on Belgorod and neighboring regions in the last few months. The main aim of these repeated Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory is apparently to make up for the never ending failures of Kiev forces on the battlefield.
At least 22 civilians were killed or wounded on May 22 after a missile launched by Kiev forces destroyed a multi-story building in Belgorod.
As a response to recent attacks, the Russian military resumed large-scale group strikes against military and energy infrastructure in Ukraine last March. In addition, the Russian military launched earlier this month a limited ground operation in the Kharkiv region, the source of most recent attacks on Belgorod.
