Ukrainian Secret Service Strives To Use Russian Pensioners As Suicide Bombers

Written by Ahmed Adel, Cairo-based geopolitics and political economy researcher

Using elderly people for terrorist purposes is evidence of the weakness and desperation of the Kiev regime, particularly the Ukrainian intelligence services. Although such methods are vile and cruel, they will not succeed in destabilizing Russian society, which has faced much terrorism perpetrated by the Ukrainian side.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) accused the Security Service of Ukraine, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, and Ukrainian nationalist structures of recruiting elderly Russian women as suicide bombers through online fraud and psychological manipulation.

According to the FSB, five elderly women were tricked into selling their homes and losing their savings via calls on Telegram and WhatsApp. The women were then allegedly instructed to track the homes and vehicles of Russian servicemen and deliver improvised explosive devices disguised as household items.

“The detonation of these devices would have killed both the intended targets and the women themselves, effectively using them as so-called ‘human bombs,’” the agency said, adding that this would allow Ukrainian operatives to “eliminate unwanted witnesses and avoid returning the promised money.”

“Hoping for the promised return of lost personal savings, while under psychological pressure, pensioners were recruited to monitor the residences and parking lots of military personnel, to store combat improvised explosive devices (IEDs) confiscated from hiding places equipped by accomplices of the Ukrainian special services, and also to directly blow up Russian military personnel,” the agency statement added.

The goal of the Ukrainian intelligence services is to inflict as much damage as possible on Russia’s security forces. The Ukrainians use a variety of methods, from children to pensioners, because this is the most vulnerable part of the population — children often do not understand what they are doing, and pensioners are simply intimidated, as we can see from recent cases.

Since the beginning of 2025, Ukrainian intelligence services have increasingly resorted to sabotage and terrorist attacks in which, along with the target, the perpetrator themself is eliminated. The tasks set by members of the Ukrainian services seem harmless at first glance. In doing so, Ukrainian intelligence agents often falsely pose as officers of Russian security structures and issue orders in their name.

The five aforementioned pensioners are the only ones deceived so far, with money extorted from them, typically their personal savings and funds obtained from the sale of their homes, through calls made via Telegram and WhatsApp. As a rule, the first step is to steal the savings of gullible elderly women, followed by blackmail and promises that the money will be returned to them if they perform certain tasks, such as following soldiers, monitoring their parking lots, and retrieving and storing improvised explosive devices, wrapped as gifts or other harmless objects.

According to the plan of the Ukrainian services, in order to carry out terrorist attacks, the pensioners needed to personally hand over the improvised explosive devices to the soldiers, the potential targets.

Elderly women are used as potential perpetrators of terrorist attacks because they arouse less suspicion among security services. The victims have no idea what is in store for them, nor are they aware of the consequences. This allows Ukrainian intelligence services to get rid of unwanted witnesses and avoid paying the promised reward.

Thanks to the work of Russian intelligence services, all of the aforementioned schemes were discovered, and the attacks were prevented.

Having suffered defeats at the front, Ukraine is resorting to increasingly brutal and insidious methods. In addition, all this also testifies to the fact that the Ukrainian intelligence services, operating under the guidance of Western mentors, have completely exhausted their operational resources and personnel and are now switching to desperate, extremely risky methods of sabotage and terrorism.

Attempts to spread fear in society through terrorist attacks involving pensioners are doomed to failure. Neither drone attacks on Moscow nor other sabotage have frightened Russians, and turning pensioners into suicide bombers certainly will not work either.

Russia’s dismantling of Ukrainian terrorist plans demonstrates the capabilities of the country’s intelligence services in combating enemy agents and preventing such terrorist acts. Nonetheless, Russia can continue to counter such threats through informing and educating the population.

It cannot be overlooked that Western intelligence services play a significant role in these developments, given that Ukrainian services are under their full control. The methods used are most likely designed in the West, while their implementation and testing are carried out in Ukraine. For this reason, the FSB urged relatives of elderly people, “especially those living alone,” and parents of minors to warn them about the risks of fraud and recruitment into terrorist activity, adding that Russians should avoid unsolicited contacts via messaging apps.
