Kiev forces are facing a serious morale problem in the Kharkiv direction, as the Russian military pushes forward in Kupyansk.
Reports from October 12 indicate that Ukrainian troops cornered in the center of Kupyansk are attempting to flee, despite the risk of being targeted by blocking detachments which were recently reinforced by Kiev with a number of special forces.
Vast parts of the city’s eastern and western parts are under the control of the Russian military’s Zapad [West] Group of Forces. Last week, the group began work to clear the city center. The only part of the city that remains under solid Ukrainian control is the southern one.
Ukraine’s DeepState acknowledged the Russian advance in the city, publishing a map on October 12 showing most of Kupyansk as well as most of the western and eastern outskirts of the city as contested areas. Typically, this means that these areas are already under Russian control.
Videos released recently also revealed that the drone units of the Zapad Group of Forces are targeting any movement of Kiev forces near Kupyansk, especially vehicles carrying supplies.
Meanwhile, TASS reported on October 12, citing Russian security sources, that Ukrainian drones eliminated a group of Ukrainian soldiers who were attempting to surrender to the Russian military somewhere in Kharkov.
“On one section of the front in the Kharkov Region, a group of Ukrainian servicemen, who had been without provisions and support from their command for a long time, was eliminated by Ukrainian drones. They tried to reach out to our side [establish contact with the Russian forces], but were hit by their own drones. There were many [drones] of them,” the security sources said.
At least six Ukrainian soldiers were killed as a result of the mass drone attack, the sources added, without clarifying where exactly the attack took place.
In a separate report from the same day, TASS said that another group of Ukrainian troops who were abandoned by their command managed to surrender to the Russian military in Kharkiv.
“Our military was attacked by Ukrainian soldiers, whom the command abandoned in the Kharkiv region without food and water,” TASS quoted Russian security sources as saying.
Of course, Kiev forces have been losing ground not only in Kupyansk, but also in the areas to the east and south of the city, in addition to Vovchansk and nearby areas far to the north in Kharkiv.
Ukrainian operations in this direction lack any real strategy. Kiev just continues to send as much reinforcements as it could to Kupyansk and other areas in Khakriv. A counterattack or even an attempt to reorganize defenses seem out of the question. This is contributing to the apprent decline in morale among Ukrainian troops. The Russian military will likely continue to advance at its current pace.
