On May 11, the Ukrainian Armed Forces reached the borders of the Russia’s Belgorod region near the village of Nekhoteevka. According to local reports, the AFU also took control of the village of Ternovka located near the border. The joint forces of the Russian Federation and the Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics continue their resistance. Ukrainian forces are pushing Russian troops out of the village of Cossack Lopan. Fighting continues north of Stary Saltov.
The Ukrainian military is set to strike the Russian military and civilian infrastructure in the Belgorod region in order to weaken the military potential of Russia on the border. Military facilities, as well as fuel bases in the border regions are the main targets. According to some reports, the attacks on the Russian territory are prepared in close cooperation with British military advisors and intelligence.
On May 11, the AFU launched an artillery strike on the Russian village of Solokhi in the Belgorod region. As a result of the attack, 1 civilian was killed and seven others were injured. The young man who died was 19 years old and several adults were injured, including a 14-year-old boy.
The shelling was carried out with MLRS, presumably from the abandoned territories of Kharkiv region.
Residents of the village of Solokhi that was shelled by the AFU were evacuated, said Governor Gladkov. A total of 17,300 civilians live in this area, according to open data. More than four hundred households have been damaged in the Bryansk and Belgorod region so far.

Explosions were also heard in the village of Dubovoye in the Belgorod region. There were reports of shooting at the border near the village of Shebekino.

The threat of terrorist attacks grows in Russia. A gunman was recently detained in the Russia’s Kursk region. Two improvised explosive devices, a traumatic weapon with ammunition and Nazi literature were seized from a resident of the region who was preparing a terrorist attack in coordination with the Ukrainian security services, the Russian Federal Security Service reported. During the interrogations, the young man confirmed that he was instructed to monitor the movement of Russian military equipment and to survey the military units in the Kursk region. He also noted that he received instructions from an officer of the Security Service of Ukraine.
On May 12, the official representative of the DPR gave an interview in which he provided statistics on the the AFU shelling on the territory of the republic. Over the past 24 hours, the Ukrainian military fired more than 360 shells and mines with the 222mm BM27 Uragan multiple rocket launcher and 122mm BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher systems. Areas of 13 settlements in the Republic came under fire.
As a result of the Ukrainian shelling, a civilian was killed and 16 others were wounded. Twenty residential buildings and four civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged. Materials on civilian deaths and injuries and damage to infrastructure were transferred to the DPR Prosecutor General’s Office to be included in the criminal cases brought against the Ukrainian nationalist commanders.
In the LPR, the situation is somewhat different. The front lines lay far from the capital, and civilians are being evacuated from the smaller villages as soon as they fall under the control of the Russian-led forces.
The armies of the Russian Federation and the LPR are currently engaged in positional combat with the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In the area south of Kremenna, the Russian forces’ attempt to cross the Seversky Donets river. The town of Liman remains under the AFU control.
On May 12, head of the LPR Leonid Pasechnik claimed: “After the end of hostilities, the LPR authorities, together with the people, will decide on becoming part of Russia. But first we need to liberate all the territories”.
The situation on the fronts remains tense. The number of civilian casualties is growing. Russian defense systems are intercepting the AFU missiles, but some of them reach their targets.

Russia showed an incomprehensible military strategy in its removal of forces that had created a buffer zone within Ukraine that would have prevented close and cross border activities. However, as I have said before Russia is un-understandable. It could be that they want these incidents to further mobilise domestic support, or to blur the lines internationally by showing Ukraine Nazis real intentions all along of attacking Russia. Either way it is not sustainable long term that Ukraine has access to the Russian border for direct aggressive actions. It will be interesting to see how Russia handles it. They are definitely highly focused on the goals of the special operation – liberating Donbas. But how are they going to deal with the side effects of that and limit also the duration of the conflict. Is it the case that the strategy for that is to hope the global effects and local effects of the conflicts long term on the west actors, bring them to their senses as a multipolar world forms – who knows!

I said this war was a huge mistake since day one, I never underestimated Ukros, but I didn’t believe RuA can be this incompetent. Chechens, Tuvans, and badly armed mobilized militia from Donetsk doing almost all the fighting in Donbas, and the Russian army can’t even keep land around Kharkov. The city itself should have been taken on day 1 btw, it is a gateway to central Ukraine. It wasn’t that heavily defended back then. Instead the initiative is on enemy side now. Putin should publicly offer a settlement of all hostilities if the Crimea, Luhansk and Donetsk are recognized as Russian oblasts. Granted the RF have not occupied all of either Luhansk or Donetsk like it has Crimea, but the RF has occupied substantial territory between Donetsk and Crimea. This must be vacated if the peace is accepted. Only Luhansk, Donetsk and Crimea will be recognized as Russian.
European states would jump at the opportunity. An end to refugees; an end to nuclear threat; an end to having to fund the Ukrainian army. The gas would flow again.
US and Ukraine would object. But the pressure would be enormous to settle on these terms.
