The United Nations has confirmed that al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is blocking aid to the victims of the February 6 Turkish-Syrian earthquake in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.
A spokesperson for the U.N.’s humanitarian aid office told Reuters on February 12 that “there are issues with approval” by HTS, without giving further information.
When the earthquake first hit, the Damascus government immediately announced its readiness to deliver aid to victims in Greater Idlib, which is under the de-facto control of HTS and several other terrorist groups.
According to Reuters, an HTS source in Greater Idlib said that the terrorist group would not allow any shipments from government-held parts of Syria and that aid would be only coming in from Turkey to the northwestern region.
“Turkey has opened all the roads and we won’t allow the regime to take advantage of the situation to show they are helping,” the source said.
The United Arab Emirates, who have already delivered loads of humanitarian aid to affected government-held parts of Syria, was reportedly involved in attempts to broker a deal to send aid convoys to Greater Idlib with help from the U.N. and the Syrian Red Crescent.
Syrian pro-government activists said that HTS asked for money to allow aid into Greater Idlib. However, this is yet to be confirmed.
The U.N. has already sent two aid convoys from Turkey to Greater Idlib though the Bab al-Hawa crossing. Nevertheless, much more can be done to help victims in the region if HTS allows aid to be directly shipped from nearby government-held parts.
Hundreds of some 30,000 who lost their lives in the Turkish-Syrian earthquake were living in Greater Idlib. Most of the casualties were in the region’s northern and eastern parts.
HTS’s decision to block aid to earthquake victims in Greater Idlib for political or financial purposes reveals the radical, inhuman nature of the power-hungry terrorist group. It’s worth noting that the mainstream media have been trying to whitewash the group and its leader, wanted terrorist Abu Mohamad al-Julani, for the last few years.
