UN says Libyan govt. to be installed in Tripoli within days

The head of the UN mission in Libya Martin Kobler

On Tuesday the head of the UN mission in Libya Martin Kobler made an announcement after a ministerial meeting attended by representatives from neighboring states in Tunis, which says the North African country’s new unity government will be installed in the capital Tripoli within days.

Since Muammar Gaddafi was deposed in 2011 under NATO airstrikes and later killed by militants, Libya has been struggling with violence and political uncertainty.

Libya has had two governments and two parliaments, with the General National Congress run by rebels in the capital and the internationally-recognized administration in Tobruk.

ISIS took control of Sirte in June 2015 by taking advantages of the political chaos, almost four months after the group announced its presence in the northern Libyan port city.

However, Faez al-Sarraj is expected to be the new prime minister under an agreement reached between rival parties last December. Although, last week Libya’s current government opposed the UN-sponsored unity government, reducing hopes of an improvement in the situation.
