On September 11, the Ukrainian military announced a new media victory in the Black Sea. After several unsuccessful attempts to reach the Crimean Peninsula, the Kiev forces decided to shoot another TikTok video on an abandoned drilling platform located dozens of kilometers to the west of the peninsula.

The Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine (GUR) declared that the Ukrainian military landed on the drilling platforms known as ‘Boyko towers’, located in the western part of the Black Sea. The claims were supported by footage from the spot.

“A unique operation to take control of the ‘Boyko towers’ was carried out by units of the GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, in particular, the drilling platforms “Pyotr Godovalets” and “Ukraine”, as well as the “Tavrida” and the “Sivash” came back under control,” the GUR said in a statement.

The details of the operation are not disclosed but it was mentioned that it included several episodes. During one of the combat sorties, a group of Ukrainian servicemen landed on a platform. According to the GUR, Ukrainian forces managed to capture valuable trophies which included a stock of helicopter ammunition of the NAR type (unguided aircraft missiles), as well as the Neva radar, which was aimed to track the movement of ships in the Black Sea.

It was also claimed that during one of the sorties, Ukrainian boats were attacked by a Russian Su-30 fighter.

“As a result of the battle, the Russian plane was defeated and had to retreat”,- noted in the GUR.

The video shared by the GUR includes footage of various operations of the Ukrainian groups in the Black Sea. Since August, activities of Ukrainian boats in the western part of the Black Sea were confirmed by various military sources as well as by the Russian military officials. However, most of them ended in failure and destruction of numerous Ukrainian boats, including those heading towards the Crimean peninsula and operating near the Zmeiny Island. Thus, the media campaign on the drilling platforms turned out to be a costly adventure. The goal of the operation is also obscure.

According to the Ukrainian military, the control of the ‘Boyko towers’ is an important step towards the Ukrainian control of the Crimean peninsula but another victory is nothing but a media campaign which had no impact on the military situation in the area.

The claims of ‘Ukrainian control’ of the facilities are fake.

Back in 2014, the platforms came under the Russian control and in 2015 they were moved closer to the coast of Crimea. Until the summer of 2022, they operated normally and served as radar and radio surveillance posts, as well as an intermediate base, for the Russian military. In June 2022 , the AFU launched a missile strike, which forced the evacuation of personnel from there. All workers were evacuated and no Russian military forces were guarding the platforms.

In its turn, the Ukrainian military can not take control of the platforms since Ukraine has no fleet to secure them. All Ukrainian servicemen fled the area immediately after they took photos there.

Probably, the Ukrainian military could install any tracking devices, radar stations or electronic warfare systems on the platforms but the Russian military will easily destroy them and restore all the necessary equipment there if necessary.

The Russian side has not yet commented on such information. Nevertheless, in an attempt to make an epic video and declare another fake victory, the Ukrainian military lost several boats with professional servicemen on board over the past week alone.
