Between November 28th and 29th, an air strike killed a commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) at the Syria-Iraq border, Reuters reported citing unnamed sources.
Reuters’ report was made based on the claims of unnamed Iraqi security and local militia officials.
The IRGC commander’s identity is also unknown. He was killed alongside three other unnamed individuals who were traveling in the same vehicle.
The vehicle was carrying weapons across the Iraqi border and was hit after it had entered Syrian territory, two Iraqi security officials separately said.
Allegedly members of an “Iran-backed Iraqi paramilitary group” which is likely the Popular Mobilization Units, which are part of the Iraqi Armed Forces, allegedly retrieved the bodies.
The incident came just days after Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was assassinated in Tehran in a killing that Iran has blamed on Israel.
In the week ending on November 29th, Israel launched air raids against what it called a wide range of Syrian and Iranian targets in Syria. It also signaled it will pursue its policy of striking Iranian targets in the region as U.S. President Donald Trump prepares to leave office.
Dozens of Iran-backed fighters have been killed in Israeli strikes in Syria over the past month, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The US warned Iraq in September to reign in militias and cease attacks in the vicinity of the US Embassy. Baghdad’s Green Zone, where the US and other embassies are located, was hit by rockets again in November.
The Lebanon-based Al-Mayadeen TV channel, which is close to the Syrian government and Lebanese Hezbollah, said that trusted sources have denied the assassination of an Iranian commander and three of his bodyguards.
Regardless, other Arab media reports claimed that the commander is (or was) named Muslim Shahdan.
A top-level UAE source told Middle East Eye on November 30th that Iran has sent a warning to the United Arab Emirates in case of a US attack on Iran.
It is unclear if a commander had, in fact, been killed, however, this is an interesting rumor at a time when a top Iranian nuclear scientist was assassinated, as well as there are reports of Trump mulling a sort of “farewell strike” on Iran.
It is a time of escalation, with Israel aggressively striking alleged Iranian targets in Syria, the assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, blamed on Israel, as well as other reports of potential aggression against Tehran.
