That’s Americans for you, they seem to believe in the Vatican more than Catholics do. The only time I go to a church is for a funeral, wedding or baptism. The last time a priest called to my home, was in the 80s collecting the dues. I have a cousin who is a priest, great guy, he was ordained when I was about 10. My parents brought us to his parents house to see him off, he was going to Africa as a missionary. The next time I met him, I was 25, he came back to raise money for his African parish. I was expecting a prim and proper priest, like the one in the Sopranos, but this guy looked like Jesus, long hair, jeans and sandals, the guy could have scored with any woman, lol. He lived among his parishioners, in a hut, suppose that’s why he was raising money. He was down to earth, funny, and had a great attitude. Great guy, no preaching, he reminded me of a soldier. I knew two guys in the Army, who had first been in training to be priests, but left before being ordained. Not much difference between soldiers and priest, discipline and devotion, loyalty and willing to put up with hard times. Anyway, he went back to Africa, he returned about 6, 7 years later. He was being sent to San Francisco, still a cool guy, I joked with him about the change in lifestyle, he just pointed out, the many illnesses he had suffered living in Africa, his age, so on. I guess he deserved it. I doubt he’d ever make Pope, too honest, nobody gets to the top, without being ready to do the real dirty work.

I grew up with a mother who was seriously obsessed with the religion, the priests, the bishops and the Popes. In fact, when Mother Theresa died, I swear to god my mum was waiting for the phone call, to offer her the replacement position. Cannot explain it, but, I never quite got the hang of going to confession on a Saturday night, allegedly telling a man in a black dress, behind the curtain your gossip and then no matter what you did, it was ‘three hell Mary’s and one Our Father’, whether you were a little kid or an IRA gang leader, you all got the same and then you could just go back to business as usual the following day. I was never into hypocrisy, but, owing to observing it all, as a child, when you would get the legends of the Church, attend Confession and then they would walk out and diss the local tramp, it used to horrify me. There were also many parishioners that were genuine and not part of the faith for there own glory.

With regards my mother and those similar to her, it was like a cult that she belonged to and must admit, it has provided a lot of comedy, along the way., for my imagination to work with.

My Mother asks me every now and then about going to Church, I tell her if I ever die and meet God, I’ll batter the muppet. If there is a God, then why do we have to put up with all this shite down here? I believe in the Ten Commandments, if we didn’t have them, we would be no better than animals.

I am quite spiritual, but, do not follow organised religion. Do wonder why we class ourselves as the most intelligent of animals, when if it was not for humans, there would be peace on the planet.
