Late on May 7, unknown gunmen attacked a headquarters of the Turkish-backed Sham Corps in the eastern Idlib countryside.

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), clashes took place around the headquarters, located near the towns of al-Fu’ah and Kafriya. The clashes lasted for several hours. Eventually, the attackers managed to escape.

“There is no information about any human loses [in the attack],” the monitoring group said in a report.

Last week, a commander of the Turkish-backed Sham Corps, known as “Haj Talib al-Khatib,” survived an assassination attempt in the southeastern Idlib countryside. Back then, al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) was accused of plotting the attack.

The terrorist group is currently in a conflict with Sham Corps, that is supporting Turkish efforts to secure the Lattakia-Aleppo highway, known as the M4.

HTS may be attempting to intimidated the Sham Corps by orchestrating such attacks. The terrorist group used similar tactics to solidify its grip over Greater Idlib over the last year.

Now, however, the situation in the region is different due to the large Turkish military presence. HTS could pay a hefty price for any uncalculated move against Turkey’s proxies, including the al-Sham Corps.
