Early on April 30, unknown gunmen attacked a checkpoint of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the eastern countryside of Daraa.

Heavy clashes erupted around the checkpoint, which is located near the town of al-Sahwat. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said that no casualties were reported as a result of the attack.

In the last few months, several attacks targeted government forces checkpoints in the towns of al-Karak, Tasil, al-Hrak, Jillen, Oumm Oualad and Elmah in the countryside of Daraa. ISIS claimed responsibility for some of the attacks.

A day earlier, the terrorist group claimed that its cells “killed” an SAA service member in eastern Daraa. However, local sources said the service member was injured only.

ISIS cells may be behind the attack on al- Sahwat’s checkpoint. The group’s growing influence in Daraa poses a serious threat to the SAA and security forces there. Government forces should take drastic measures to address this threat as soon as possible.
