On September 22nd, unknown suspects carried out an attack on the vehicle of Sergey Shefir, First Aide to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
The driver was wounded in the attack, Iryna Pryanishnikova, the Kiev Police Department’s spokesperson said.
“We confirm the attack. The driver was wounded,” she said.
Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova says 7.62 mm automatic weaponry was used in the attack and that she believes the criminal intentions were “serious.”
The attack took place in the village of Lisnyky outside Kiev. The Ministry of Internal Affairs said over 10 bullets had hit the vehicle.
However, a local television station said at least 19 bullet holes could be seen on the driver’s side of the car.
An investigative and operational group is working on the spot, an operation is underway to intercept criminals.
The head of the Servant of the People faction in the Rada said that he did not know whether the adviser had received threats.
Shefir is a long-term friend and business partner of the Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, co-owner of the Kvartal 95 studio. The incident has already been reported to the President.
Sergey Shefir, born in 1964, graduated from Kryvy Rih Mining Institute (now it is Kryvy Rih National University). He is a scriptwriter, producer, co-founder and a former shareholder of Studio Kvartal-95.
Studio Kvartal-95 is a television entertainment production company, operating in Ukraine since 2003.
Zelensky, who came to power on a promise to take on the country’s oligarchs and fight corruption, is currently in the United States at the U.N. General Assembly. He has realized none of his initial claims.
His office said Zelensky had been informed and would comment shortly.
Zelenskiy adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said the assassination attempt could be a result of the president’s fight against the oligarchs.
“This open, deliberate and extremely violent assault with automatic weapons cannot be qualified any differently than as an attempted killing of a key team member,” Podolyak told Reuters.
“We, of course, associate this attack with an aggressive and even militant campaign against the active policy of the head of state,” Interfax Ukraine quoted Podolyak as saying.
“The president’s policy aimed at fundamental transformation of the state will remain unchanged,” he told Reuters, promising tougher measures against oligarchs.
Parliament is this week due to debate a presidential law directed on reducing the influence of oligarchs.
