On April 29, Iraqi security forces foiled a terrorist attack and killed a suicide bomber in the center of the northern province of Kirkuk.

In a statement, the Iraqi Security Media Cell said that security forces killed a suicide attacker wearing an explosive belt who attempted to enter the building of the Directorate of National Security in Kirkuk city.

“The incident inflicted light wounds on two guards,” the statement reads. “The [attackers’] suicide belt blew up after being shot by the directorate’s guards.”

No group has claimed responsibility for the failed suicide attack, yet. ISIS, which is known for carrying out such attacks, remains the main suspect.

ISIS cells in Kirkuk have been fairly active. On April 24, ISIS terrorists attacked a post of the Iraqi Federal Police bear the town of al-Suss. On April 29, the terrorists carried out a second, bolder attack by pounding a base of the Iraqi military in al-Zarkah with five mortar shells.

The Hamrin Mountains, which lay along the border with the province of Saladin, is the main stronghold of the terrorist group in Kirkuk. The mountains were targeted by the Iraqi Air Force on several occasions over the last few months. Yet, the terrorists are still launching attacks from there.
