New vessels joined the fleet of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy on January 6, including a radar-evading warship, speedboats and corvettes equipped with a range of missiles.
In a ceremony at Iran’s southern port city of Bandar Abbas, the IRGC Navy took delivery of an advanced warship, named after Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy commander of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) who was killed alongside Iran’s Major General Qassem Soleimani in a United States drone strike near Baghdad four years ago.
IRGC Navy Commander Rear Admiral Ali Reza Tangsiri said the new warship has an endurance of 14 days and can cruise within a radius of 2,000 nautical miles.
The Abu Mahdi warship, which is powered by four propulsive engines and can evade radar detection, can stay afloat under Force Six conditions and carry out naval missions under Force Five conditions thanks to its advanced catamaran design, the commander said.
The Force Six in the sea is defined as the weather conditions in which the wind speed is between 39-49 km per hour and the wave height reaches 4 meters.
Other vessels and weapons that entered service with the IRGC Navy during the ceremony included dozens of Tareq-class and Ashura-class armed with rockets, anti-ship missiles and torpedoes as well as a hundred ground-base multiple rocket launchers.
The ceremony was also attended by IRGC commander Major General Hossein Salami, who said that Iran’s “enemies” should keep their distance, otherwise they will face “a powerful reaction.”
“We need to defend our national interests wherever they extend,” Salami said in a televised speech. “It will be harmful for the enemy to be found near and at a half distance. They should stay away from this area.”
The Guards’ navy, he said , had made a “brilliant leap in its offensive and defensive powers” to challenge the world’s naval powers.
Salami’s remarks came amid high tensions in the Red Sea after a recent warning by the U.S. and its allies to the Iranian-backed Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen, over their recent attacks on Israeli-affiliated ships. Earlier this week, an Iranian warship arrived near Yemen.
Iran has been working to improve the capabilities of its naval forces for the last few years in order to counter the growing presence of the U.S. Navy in the Persian Gulf and to expand its own naval operations in remote waters, including the Red Sea.
