An unknown number of aircraft, including the advanced F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jets, were damaged when the Hurricane Michael mauled Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida, the US Air Force confirmed.
Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek told Defense News that some jets were parked inside Tyndall’s hangars due to maintenance or safety reasons. All of those hangars were hit by the hurricane. According to an official version, the Air Force was unable to identify the number of aircraft damaged and to say which models were impacted.
According to US media, out of the 55 F-22 jets stationed at the air base, 33 had been moved prior to the storm’s arrival. Thus, 22 were left at Tyndall. Considering the level of destruction, all of them could be damaged. One F-22 jet costs about $339m.

No, they didn’t really have notice. The aircraft cycle into maintenence periods so not all of the aircraft are movable at any given time. The aircraft they could move they did and these were the ones that were undergoing significant maintenence. They didn’t have enough notice to transport them out with heavy lifters assuming that is even possible. It might not be possible to break them down to a air transportable configuration. So they tuck them away into hangars built to some wind resistance standard but obviously not a cat 4 hurricane one. Remember too this was the highest winds to ever make landfall so it was a once in a lifetime storm.
With the huge cost per plane you would think they could design hurrican proof hangers or even underground storage

I read somewhere that the hangars were built to 135 mph wind standards. This would be fine except for Michael with the highest windspeed to make landfall AND a direct hit on the airbase.

What significant work have the F22’s been doing to warrant such “significant maintenance”?
Anything that keeps them from flying would be significant in this circumstance. These planes are known to be high-maintenance hangar-queens. They likely rotate them for the training programs that are conducted at that airbase.

About all fighter aircraft require several hours of maintenance for every hour of flight time. After X number of flying hours the mechanics really dig into those to remove components for inspection to see if they need to be rebuilt or replaced. All that takes a considerable amount of time along with putting everything back. The USAF can’t load those up on truck trailers to haul away to safety unless the wings are removed. That has to be done at the factory so those were left behind with hopes they could weather the storm inside the hangers.
Very interesting comment, the 22 STILL on base because of repair needs is ALSO indicative of excessive maintenance requirements, these birds are not flying combat.
