The counteroffensive of Ukrainian troops on Kherson was previously announced by representatives of the Zelensky regime and Western media. It was reportedly planned for August 10, but the operation was postponed for more than three weeks. It was supposed that the reason was the different views on the prospects of the operation at the Office of the President of Ukraine and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to the Ukrainian media, Commander-in-Chief Zaluzhny considered defensive tactics to be the most advantageous at the moment as a large-scale offensive operation would lead to the loss of accumulated reserves and weapons.
In his turn, President Zelensky is forced to declare any victories on the front lines. Firstly, he had to prove the effectiveness of foreign military equipment supplied to the AFU by the Western allies. Secondly, any large-scaled operations would bring the war in Ukraine back to the headlines of the MSM, pushing the European governments to increase their support to Kiev.
On August 28, the head of the Kiev regime held a secret meeting with the military, after which the offensive began. Zelensky got what he wanted, paying no attention to the price of the issue, measured in thousands of human lives.
As a result, the first day of the Ukrainian counteroffensive resulted in heavy losses of the AFU.
The city of Kherson under fire
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russian forces destroyed 48 tanks, 46 infantry fighting vehicles, 37 other armored combat vehicles, 8 pickups with heavy machine guns and more than 1,200 Ukrainian servicemen during the day.
‘While repelling the enemy’s offensive, Russian troops defeated units of the 128th separate mountain Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which was transferred to participate in the operation from western Ukraine. Five servicemen of this brigade laid down their arms and surrendered.’ the report by the Russian MoD reads.

So far, the gains of the AFU on the front line have been quite modest. The advancing units of the AFU were stopped by Russian forces almost in all directions. The only success of the AFU was reported near Andreevka and Davydov Brod. The Ukrainians broke through to the village of Suhoi Stavok and knocked out the defense in Davydov Brod. Both settlements are in the gray zone. None of the warring sides holds control of them.
In the other areas, the front lines reportedly remained almost unchanged so far. LINK

Zelensky clearly comes from the Joseph Stalin school of military tactics and strategy. Do not heed your generals advice, fight for every meter of ground by throwing endless bodies of conscripts in the enemy’s way and constantly piss away whatever reserves you have build up in premature counter attacks. Which was why the Red Army suffered its heaviest casualties for 2 years straight, until Stalin finally began to listen to his generals. And allowed them to properly prepare and launch military offensives like Uranus and Mars. And even then only Uranus, the encirclement of the 6th German Army at Stalingrad, succeeded. Whereas Mars, Zhukov’s grand offensive at Rhzev to destroy the German 9th Army, failed miserably. And was covered up after the war as just a diversion.
The defensive strategy advocated by Zaluzhny is the smart strategy to follow. Hold the Russians in the Donbass while using the weapons supplied by NATO to create a new more modern army while the old one dies in the Donbass. But Zelensky knows the Russians aren’t trying to break through the lines and race to Kiev. Even if he loses everything in futile counter offensives, he needs good headlines to prop up Ukrainian morale and to convince NATO the Ukraine is not a lost cause. And if he has to sacrifice every Ukrainian male to do so, he will.
