Russia-1 aired on May 22 a report showing an upgraded version of the Russian Gibka-S short-range air defense system operating right on the front near the settlement of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk direction.
The Gibka-S, which is based on the Tigr-M multi purpose armored vehicle, was designed by the JSC Machine Building Design Bureau to counter a wide range of aerial targets, including jets, helicopters, drones, cruise missiles, and precision-guided weapons.
The system can be armed with up to four Igla-S, or Verba heat-seeking anti-aircraft missiles. The Igla-S has a range of 6 kilometers and altitudes of up to 3.5 kilometers. The Verba offers an even better performance, with a maximum engagement range of 6.5 kilometers and a ceiling of 4.5 kilometers.
To detect aerial targets and guide the missiles, the Gibka-S is equipped with a day and night capable electro-optical targeting system.
In addition to the missiles, the upgraded system seen in Russia-1 report operating near Pokrovsk was armed with what appears to be a remotely-controlled PKTM 7.62 mm machine gun. The system was also equipped with a cage armor and a jammer to protect against drones.
The Gibka-S was operating besides a 1L122 radar, also based on a Tigr vehicle. The radar, which has a range of 40 to 80 kilometers, was detecting and tracking aerial targets for the air defense system.
Reports of the Gibka-S being deployed in the special military operation zone first came out in 2023. The deployment of the system expanded through 2024.
The Gibka-S is reportedly being used mainly to counter Ukrainian drones. Its deployment near Pokrovsk, one of the most active fronts in the special military operation zone, indicated that the system had proven its effectiveness in real combat conditions.
